In eastern Canada 3 provinces share a trunking system with loads of talk groups. Just wondering ..... are the transmissions by the talk groups available to be heard if a tower is nearby? In other words, if a talk group on the system transmits 100 miles away from me, will I be able to hear it?

You can only hear the talkgroups of the radios connected to the tower nearby you. Let say for example there is an ambulance from New Brunswick in your area in NS, with a TMR radio on talkgroup 50931 (ANB Dispatch East 1), you will be able to hear communications on that talkgroup while that radio is connected to the tower nearby you.

@lacadien72 explained it pretty good. For example, I couldn't hear HRFE Dispatch unless a radio close to me was on the same talkgroup and affiliated with a tower within range of my scanner.

Sometimes you'll get lucky and a radio will affiliate with a tower close to you and you'll hear traffic you normally don't. Every once in awhile I'll pick up ANB from the Island.
