As of today, Maryland has more posts to this site than any state other than Texas which is the home of RadioReference.com. That's amazing since Maryland could fit into just a couple of Texas' 254 counties. In fact, Brewster County in Texas is almost the size of Maryland. We even have more posts than the entire country of Canada.

I also notice that D.C. and Virginia are also well represented, way beyond their size.

Could it be that this area is a hotbed of scanning? Or could it be because this is a rapidly changing area due to the almost total switch to digital trunking?

Much of the major metro areas already have well established groups/lists where discussions take place for those areas. For instance, I also run the DFWSCAN mailing list on yahoogroups for the Dallas/Fort Worth area, and it gets close to 500 messages a month on average.

HoustonScan is very similar - run by Myles Barkman.

What you are seeing is that RadioReference is filling the gap for folks where established communities of scanning listeners aren't present for those local areas.

Lindsay, I think you're no doubt correct with the "filling the gap" scenario. However, I also do think it has something to do with the rapid changes in this general metro area covering MD, DC and northern VA. In many parts of the country, frequencies are fairly stable and have gone years with only minor changes. Here, we've undergone a total makeover (Extreme Makeover?) that is still underway so we have lots to share and lots of questions to ask. Money has been made available because of the seat of the federal government being in our back yard and changes have been ordered forcing a switch to an almost total digital environment. We've had to buy new equipment, think about adding new outdoor antenna systems because of the limited reach of digital trunking and much of it is new to us...well, some of us. And that makes for lots of conversation.

I agree with some of the previous points. Many changes in local systems and some mucho chatters. But, this area has also had Captiol Hill Monitors and the Scan-DC alias for awhile.

But I think we are also blessed with 2 major cities, several active counties, many Federal agenices HQs, several major Military bases and even Chesepeake Bay Maritime. This place rocks for scanning!!

Actually per capita population tiny Delaware is #1 on this board..LOL but that is just juggling numbers.First in the nation to go statewide APCO 25 digital but I still feel it was an overpriced system and upgrading still sucking up the money but do like some features.Mixed emotions on this!

But seriously this web site filled a large void in mid-Atlantic area with all the digital systems that came out.Learning new radio systems and technology is half the fun.No other site has educated myself more on digital radio tech than this site.
Capitol Hill Monitors also covers Delaware and is a good resource as well.
