Troy, are you on the scan-dc email list? Some talk there, apparently the audio is better...

Just in case any of you happen to pop by the Timonium Hamfest, there is a vendor with a few 396XT radios for sale - the price is around $480 cash.

If that's the same vendor that services NatComm or Bearcat club, DON'T let them try to sell you Scancat Lite Plus - which is what they use to program (I don't think that package supports the XT scanners yet, anyway). There are, as has been widely documented, many better programs out there. I'm sure the various software folks will catch up soon (currently FreeScan does work with the 396XT, but has a few bugs, mostly seems to be related to NAC processing - and Assaf just moved his program to .Net, so folks are really beginning to put it thru the ringer...) 73 Mike

I bought one over the weekend and just got it programmed tonight with Free Scan. I have noticed the following: the programmimg is lightening fast, there is better audio and there is alot more memory. I am trying to listen to digital systems now to see how much better the audio quality is (will let you know).

Nathan

(**** UPDATE) I have to say that the digital quality for Harford and Howard Counties is far more superior than the 396t I have both radio's sitting side by side and what a difference. I will let you all know on about other systems as soon as I get the chance.

I'd be interested in the audio quality of Baltimore City, and any 380 system.

396xt

Still waiting to hear from someone in the Baltimore area that has one of the new Uniden scanners. Thinking about purchase, but had terrible reception with my 1st 396.

I've had by 396XT for about a month now and I can't complain. Reception is loud and clear on the Baltimore City system. I notice significant audio improvement over the 396T.

Exceeds my expectations

I don't have a plain 396T, but my 396xt exceeds my expectations for a small hand held scanner.

How about any of the Southern MD counties, specifically Charles? Trying to find some excuse to justify buying one of these...And a new camera and new lenses...gah, so much to buy, so little $$...

Finally had a chance to hold a BCD396XT last night and briefly listened to AACo Police (digital).... Although I still like some of the features and the size of that radio (and my BCD396T) ---

... I'll be keeping my PSR-500...

Digital decode/reception/audio still can't be beat.

I also had a chance to hold and listen to AACo Police on digital on a county officer's portable radio -- My PSR-500 sound just as good or better for digital quality (in my opinion).
