• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

When you say the maxtrac will give me grief below 20 watts what do you mean?

You would be better to get a low power TK-7180(8180) 5-25w radio. They are quite happy to run anywhere in that power range. They also have a DB-25 with all the needed inputs and outputs to interface to a repeater controller.

The other option is to disconnect the PA on your Maxtrac and see how much power the exciter puts out, and if it would be enough to drive the Mastr 2 PA.

Maxtracs and their friends will turn way down in power, but they seem to keep drawing the same current
and I cant tell you how clean the output is in that state
they get just as hot just as quick
not to mention the way the firmware drops the power back as the seconds tick by

Bingo. You don’t want to run Maxtrac/GM300’s at less than 50% of its max rated power output (12.5w for a 25w radio and 22.5-25w for a high power radio)

Most FM radio power amplifiers operate class C and want to run near full output power or saturated and they are usually most efficient there. When you turn them down below a certain point they can become unstable like you set the power to 25%, unkey, key up again and the power is something different. Some transmitters can also get squirrelly and put out spurious signals when turned down too low.

thanks for the reply. I might open it up and see how much the exciter puts out alone. I don't mind getting another radio if I have to, just trying to do and play with what I have. this is a great site and the tips are great!
