I got one of those St-2 Scantennas. It came with a Matching Transformer from
300ohm to 75ohm. Is there a reason I must use this and could it be causing
my problems. I have bad reception on the UHF channels ie. the EMS 400mhz
range.

Or did I just get a crappy antenna? Should the antenna itself be grounded?

The 300 ohm to 75 ohm matching transformer may be bad.About every year, while I'm thinking about it,I will climb my tower, and change out my transformer(as I have a surplus of them)

Also,it would be difficult to attach 75 ohm coax to the contacts without a transformer,as these are made like a TV antenna.
Try to change out the transformer,I have ran across a bad one before, that was new,off of the shelf.

If that still does not get you the UHF coverage you need, you may need to install your antenna at a different location, away from trees, ect.Be sure it is away from anything metal also.

The antenna integrity should be OK,assuming there is no contact of the elements along the insulator.I suspect a bad contact,or short.

That antenna should work well.
BTW,how far away is the EMS that you are trying to monitor?

And,yes,EVERY antenna outside should be grounded.-not only on the mast, but also at the coax,at the entrance into the house.
