• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

    Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

    If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

    To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

    The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

    For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

    This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

I'm looking at possibly getting a set of Maxon 2+2 Radios, that currently have GMRS channel Crystals in it. I was curious if it would be possible to still find crystals for that radio? I seen some scanner crystals on eBay that are marked 10.7 and 10.8 for Regency or Bearcat Scanners, however I have no clue if there is a difference. I also don't know if there is a difference between RX and TX crystals. The radios I'd want to communicate with would be Motorola BPR40's and I believe operate in simplex mode, with RX/TX on the same frequency. However I just don't know the exact frequency or the spacing between channels, if I can find crystals that will work, I can find that out. I'm familiar with crystals in scanners and CB radio's just not UHF transceivers.
Now I know some are going to ask why now go with computer programmable or manual programmable radio, and the answer is simple. Only one place here does programming and they only do Motorola radios and I am not trying to obtain the software or cables to do it myself or sit around trying to punch frequencies into a radio trying to figure it out. I've thought about Baofeng radios but I'll pass.

The original crystals should have a frequency stamped on them that is mathematically related to the operating frequency;

For example

462.6000 MHz transmit /9 = 51.4000 MHz

462.6000 MHz receive - 10.7000 MHz = 451.9000 /9 = 50.21111 MHz

These are just examples where the radio has an intermediate frequency of 10.7 MHz . It could be 10.8 MHz which is less common. Your multiplier might differ.

So if you look at the original crystals and work the math you should be able to figure out exactly what crystals you have and what you will need. Those are simplex radios if I recall, so the transmit and receive should be same unless programmed for repeater in which case the transmitter would be exactly 5 MHz above the receiver.

International Crystals may be able to build you new crystals. If you send them the originals, they can do a better job of matching to the radio. Bomar also might be a source.

You will have to net the crystals on frequency with a frequency counter. The last time I dealt with this were some Motorola EXPO radios and even Motorola forgot how to make a proper crystal for their own radio that would net on freq without changing the crystal load.

The only reason I am not dissuading you from all this effort is because you are a "tube radio geek".
