Does anyone know if McDuffie County Sheriff went encrypted? I have been monitoring with a Kenwood NX-200 and all of the sudden, I stopped hearing them. I see the transmit green light remain on but I don't hear any audio. It is only on their Sheriff frequency. I am still picking up other Nexedge freqs without a problem. I also hear their EMS and Fire, so I don't think they went trunked. Reading on the different forums I am supposed to hear the digital garble, but don't hear that either. Someone mentioned something about possibly changing the channel spacing, but that is above my head. Can someone help?

Well, if they didn't have encryption enabled before, then I'm sure they will now....

I think just figured it out...they have gone to trunking. There's a waste of money for an agency that has one radio frequency going most of the time. I wish it would've been encryption. With Nxdn built in encryption and a couple of hours u can easily brute force. With the trunking route, that's another story...

When you openly admit you are taping into their network with the type radio they use, yeah, I would change formats, look up your user ID/Name/Address and then come knocking on your door. I know of people in the Atlanta area that do that with TRS and one day, the knock will come on their door!

The radio is programmed receive only. Without input freqs or RANs which is perfectly legal. Any other type monitoring such as trunking would be done through SDR on a PC also legal. The only illegality would be decryption, which although simple in the Nexedge system, I would refrain from. TRS requires authentication on the system, which could be interpreted as theft since they are not paying a suscriber fee to be on the system.

You basically endorsed the practice of breaking encryption, which to do is a crime.

What is your point? Bragging?

I am not bragging. The weak digital scrambling method implemented included with Nexedge is not a secret. In fact, I have read about it on this forum. The mere discussion of decrypting transmissions is not a crime. Lets stop the self-righteous indignation. I am not endorsing the act of actually doing it, but feel that its inherent inability to secure should be known. I was in law enforcement for 20 years and feel that the false sense of security that encryption provides may cause problems for Leos. For you goody goody two shoes, the mere fact of avoiding a route because of an event that you learned over the scanner is a crime, since you are benefitting from the interception of a transmission. Who really cares though! Where's the harm? I don't endorse criminal activity but do challenge all to possess the ability to keep technology on its toes. AES exists because DES was compromised. Years ago we used vice scrambling and that was easily defeated, so much so that you can still find the programs that descrambled the voice inversion.

Look, no one is disputing that "weak" encryption such as ADP, WEP, etc. is easy to OWN.

But one doesn't talk about it on a public forum.

and like it or not, it IS a crime in this state. It's known as computer network trespass. Just because someone's password is "PASSWORD1" or "123456" does not mean it isn't hacking and does not mean it is NOT a crime.

Even the act of disclosing a password is a felony in Georgia. I suggest you read up on OCGA 16-9-90 and become familiar with it before someone knocks at your door. Do as you wish.

Your choice, your consequence.

I appreciate your comments and am aware of the legalities. Again, knowledge of how doesn't constitute an illegality and I have not disclosed any passwords, nor would I. The technical aspects of any radio system should be discussed in open forum. Just like there are plenty of forums and legal websites that explain how to crack WEP/WPA. It is a penetration testing tool. The line is crossed if you actually do it with criminal intent. It is perfectly legal to do for research or pen testing. I welcome the knock at my door. I don't endorse or engage illegal activities, but do challenge innovation and tech furtherance.
It's usually not the hacker that will disclose vulnerabilities, it is the law abiding pen tester that publishes vulnerabilities and fixes.
Remember it is your tax dollars that fund the ignorant decisions that law enforcement agencies make when upgrading systems.

Back on topic...I don't think they have trunked because the only control channel I can find in range is 155.1100 and it sounds like TRBO leading me to think it is part of Jefferson County's new system. So they may have split 155.565 into two 6.25 kHz channels, which would be 3.125 +- from 155.565 right? What are they? I don't remember if it is +- .3125 or .03125 or .003125. Can someone help?
