Something is going on at McGuire AFB (JB McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst) tonight. Heavies are landing every 10 minutes or so, squawking on 124.150, as they land. Unusually heavy traffic, not touch and go. One helo also went over the house on the way in. Don't see anything in the news yet that might offer a clue.

Living under the glideslope, 9 miles from the main runway, I don't normally pay attention to the landings. But when lights sweep across the property and the frequency picks up late at night... it seemed to quiet down after 1 am. Nothing thus morning, so far.

Like Dover AFB McGuire becoming busy cargo carrier for the Dod.
Looks like you had a couple Civy 747 heavies in there last night.
You can follow those types in and out of McGuire on flightaware..

Thanks for the heads up on the link. I was aware of FlightAware but I had never found KWRI when looking through the site. All I had seen before are the passenger airlines to KPHL, KEWR et al. But I assume FA won't show military aircraft?

No it won't show the military flights. Only civilian operated contractor flights.

Another site I use is www.planefinder.net.

Depending on the aircraft equipment (ADS-B) it will show up on the map with real time flight track. It also shows flights that are not displayed on flightaware. I have caught the E6B a few times.

Another very busy Sunday evening into Monday morning at MAFB with planes every 10 minutes or so from 8p as I write this now. Picking up to 5 minute intervals after 11p. All ILS landings. Nothing seen on FlightAware so I assume it is all military aircraft. Busy on A/D 124.150 AM. Tnanks for PlaneFinder, but nothing seen there either.

What are heavies?
I'll leave the official definition to those qualified to answer in detail, but for me heavies are the assorted huge cargo planes. There is a distinctive sound to the engines as air speed drops and drag increases from wheels down and flaps engaged. HTH.

Probably from Evergreen Airlines. 747-200s. They're pretty much U.S. Air Mobility Command & the CIA's favorite civilian cargo contractor. They run regularly scheduled flights on a Ramstein/McGuire route, sometimes using military call signs, usually not.

I always thought the aeronautical term "Heavy" was a term used to mean that a commerical aircraft
had passengers.

FF - Medic !!!

I also heard that the term "Heavy" meant a plane that causes wake turbulence.

Here is the definition. It's recently changed from 255,000

Heavy. Aircraft capable of takeoff weights of 300,000 pounds or more, whether or not they are
operating at this weight during a particular phase of flight.
