McLean County Sheriff Dave Owens is seeking new radios for the jail correctional officers; radios with a "man down" sensor that will alert if the radio is not upright. This request comes in response to the recent brutal beating of a corrections officer by an inmate leaving the officer laying on the ground unconscious.

Motorola has an emergency button feature on their radios that when
activated will show up on a computer monitor in the jail control center or dispatch center if the deputy is in need of help out on the road. We have had them on our radios at East Baton Rouge SO and the only time it is to be used is if the officer is unable to call on the radio by voice , all the officer has to do is push the button and the
troops are on the way

red8 - The jailer was knocked unconcious, therefore unable to press the button.

This would be more like the police version of PASS devices for firefighters.

Great idea.

Cubn, do you think it will actually pass the needed people here in McLean County? Hopefully none of those nay-sayers in the comments section are on the County Board.

There is also a device that the officer wears on his belt that can be
activated when needed also that is about the size of a pager or a
cigarette pack also. Just making suggestion

Man down

I'm sure Motorola has the feature you describe. Our jail has Kenwood TK380 units that have it. There is a button to push, but if the radio is not upright, it will also send an alarm.
