I have fallen away from scanning for several years, but not an looking at getting an SDS100 and getting back into it.

I see now that there is a lot of talk groups on the Dalton Communications system. What is the benefit of this system over TACN? I looked like there have been a few posts about McMinn county and the Dalton system, it seems they have switched back and forth, so what is going on now?

TACN of course is P25 Phase I and II mainly on VHF (some) and 7/800 (majority). Dalton Communications is NXDN.

Going to take a wild guess and say costs was a major factor in their decision to go with Dalton Communications.

In the past all McMinn county agencies including city police and fire departments were dispatched from one site. I believe they we’re calling Control 1, 2, or 3 depending on which department was calling dispatch.

We can assume this has probably given more things to keep up with for the dispatchers now that more than one radio system is in the equation, but it was analog, NXDN, and P25.

This article is from earlier this year and will probably explain better than I can. I’m only remotely familiar with their old system so I really don’t speak with any authority on their present situation.

Good luck with the SDS!
