• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

MCS2000 Screen Display out to Serial

Looked around and didn't see anything about this. Most likely means its impossible but hey one things I have learned in the computer field is most of the time its not impossible just harder than one thinks.

I am no electronic engineer but someone here might be.

I am using an MCS2000 as a scanner to stream to broadcastify. I used to use a BC15x. This gave the ability to send the channel tags to RadioFeed and then off the listeners.
I am now just using Pulse Point Data and sending over Fire events for now to keep the metadata/tags still functioning for something.
I was wondering if anyone has ever came up with a way or thinks there is a way to get the display from the MCS2000 shipped off the a serial port connection that can be monitored by RadioFeed.

Long shot but thought I'd throw it out there.

Thanks everyone!

I don't know if that's possible, but there is a way to get data out of the radio for use by an alternate control head; the transit operator on the radio system I used to manage used this to hook up the custom control heads that went with their CAD/AVL system.

I think it uses RS485 to give you everything you're looking for, but I don't know if it would work for what you want to do or not.

The protocol worked with MCS2000 mobiles on our analog system, and IIRC also on the XTL2500 and XTL5000 mobiles they bought when the MCS radios were no longer available. Motorola naturally changed the protocol when they went to the APX line, which caused consternation at the transit radio shop.

This is possible but may require some custom work on your end. A while back I found a software that allowed to view the screen of the MCS2000 and control everything from my computer screen, I think it was called virtual radio control head or something similar, but I had to run it on a Win XP virtual machine. If I recall it uses the SB9600 protocol? This was done by having the programming cable connected to the PC, you may be able to find a way to view the raw data and pull the channel name text from that for your feed, but I think it would be a lot easier to just use a BCT15x or similar scanner that natively will send Alpha Tags to the feed.

Thanks both of you... I will be looking into both options...
I moved away from the BCT15x because it for some reason has a hard time recieving some channels. They come over very poorly... the MCS2000 receives them LOUD and clear... I've tried everything...

You might look in to Virtual Radio Control Head (VRCH) I'm not sure if it would serve you purpose or not. It interfaces to the radio via a RIB by serial and uses either the accessory plug or front panel (same as the programming cable). Batlabs has how to make the adapter DB25 an resistor and RJ45.
