• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

There is a Harris TSM describing the configuration of G-Star for compatibility with Motorola systems with MDC.
Really simple and a matter of using 1800/1200 Hz for tones and setting the tone timing as needed.
Nothing mentioned regarding the displaying of packet info, but to access a Moto repeater, yes.
The point of APCO P25 is for compatibility between different systems, especially digital.

Modern GE/Ericsson/Tyco/M/A-Com/Harris/L3Harris (whatever we want to be today) are able to seamlessly integrate this functionality. We're running a multi-vendor environment on MDC-1200 and have no issues amongst subscribers.

Right, the patent on MDC1200 expired a few years ago. Most of the big manufacturers added the functionality around that time. Kenwood released some firmware that added the feature to many of the radios at the time. All the Kenwood stuff I've purchased at work in the last 10 years or so have all been MDC1200 capable.

I believe the patent for only the ID feature expired… DOS muting looks to still be a Motorola only thing.. vertex had it also but needed an option board made by a completey different manufacturer so Technically I don’t count em either

And kenwood i can’t speak for them since I never used the new ones… I think EF Johnson can DOS mute since they are basically mirror images of Motorolas in terms of operating system and software

DOS muting seems to work fine on my Kenwood radios.
Why majority dont pre ptt mdc ill never know. It comes in handy with Dunlap keyups banging the console or door. Though those make for some interesting moments not ideal on a PS system to hang things up.

the NX line if programmed right will mute pre mdc. Though if your city uses a muting at voter level this would be solution for post mdc muting 😉

I can say that BK P150 and M150 radios do pre- and post- MDC1200 signaling, but do not do DOS or preamble functions. I brought the concept of DOS up once in Melbourne a few years ago and they looked at me funny. Their P150 line just discontinued production, so I'm unclear about future product features. Also, the Telex Vega C-Soft console will decode and display, as well as outwardly signal in MDC1200, but also does not mute during reception. It would be very nice if it did.

I had a fairly large fleet of EFJ 5100 and 5300 radios with an expansive aviation-based organization. The radio system that supported those radios did not use MDC, so I never tried it (although we used P25 discrete user ID but never could standardize on what exactly to put in there, so most IDs were "1"). They are NOT just like Motorolas, although the 5100 series shared Motorola RSMs, batteries, etc., they had far more problems than an XTS or Spectra/XTL and used independently developed firmware and software, among various hardware and construction technique differences.
