Enforcer, you mean they will all be on the new system without being patched through from the old system?

He means they will begin patching in the north and south precincts. Simulcast of the VSELP system. The dispatch offices of both MPD and SCSO are still using their current radio systems. They are being patched to the new digital system. Most of the cars for Shelby County have the new radio's in. Some cars for MPD have the new radios in, some don't. That's why some of the cars come in crystal clear, like MLGW sounds, and some don't. The cars that don't are still transmitting using the old VSELP radios.

Hope this clears up rg65's question too.

Ohh,so the north and south will just be getting the new raios, but still being patched.Like you said, some sound great, some don't.I thought they would all be programmed with the new system, and be on.

Seems like they mostly are already patched, which is why I was thinking that it was going be all with the new system this weekend.

Somebody said that once a precinct changesover they will need to keep their VSELP radios in order to talk to precincts that have not switched over and to work details. I take that to mean that they will not patch the whole system. Maybe two or three precincts until they complete the switch hand helds and mobiles and then go on to another precinct. I don't know how it will work only that we will be keeping both radios until the switch is complete.

West dispatch and car to car and info is patched right now. Followed by north and south soon. SCSO North and West/Central dispatch along with Records/NCIC and process servers is on air.

I spoke with a "higher up" in the fire department to try to get a sure date on when the Fire Department will be switching over and there is no definite date for us. The person does not seem to think it will be this year.

Was informed this morning, 12/09/2005, that the Naval Support Activity, Midsouth Fire & Emergency Services will be joining the Memphis-Shelby County TRS. Date not firm, but reps from NAS Jacksonville will be visiting here during January doing preliminary studies.
Do know that it will involve new APCO digital Motorolas and MDT's.

Will pass along more as I can.

If the military has to conduct a study, bid and purchase radios, I would imagine a couple of years and I'm not kidding either.

Implementation expected mid 2006. Equipment(radios,MDT, etc.) has been acquired, study is to assess public safety needs such as # of mobiles, portables, to install repeater on new water tower at South gate.

Why are they going to put a repeater on the south gate if they are going on the memphis TRS? Are they going to add a site?

Umm I hate to sound sarcastic, but hey, if they are planning to place a digipeater on that location, that does kinda indicate a "new" site. And perhaps thier studies show a need for increased coverage in that location for thier needs. At least the costs would be payed by the Federal Gubment not by Shelby County, or by the City of Memphis. This would also place a site in close proximity to be feasable if say Millington decides to join the TRS, yes? I foresee eventually all the municipalities onboard, or at least patched in in the next few years.

I disagree that all of the munis will join. They do not want to give up control of their radio system to the Mayor of Memphis (which some of them disagree with regularly). Collierville just purchased a new system a few years ago. Bartlett is putting in a new system soon, Millington might, but I doubt Germantown will.

Since the system was spec'd to cover the whole county (for the deputies), then by default it covers Millington already. They might not have included the base in their coverage studies, but they did include Millington.

Time will tell.

That's interesting that NAS is studying about joining the new Memphis/Shelby county system. I thought most military facilities were using Motorola 400 UHF/trunked systems (at least in San Diego)....j c

Ok, now that it looks like its coming together, I guess I should get the Pro 96 all programmed right. I haven't worked with the folders and everything else that the scanner has.I've just been scanning the cc. I have the book that came with it.Is it difficult? Does that get the display to show mpd west etc...? I heard don starr program is good.

Yes you want to get Don Starr's program Win 96 it makes it super easy. Use the new memphis/shelby county database here http://www.radioreference.com/modules.php?name=TRSDB&sid=4361 and just input the talkgroups you car about and away you go. The only things that are on right now is SCSO north and west/central dispatches and Info/NCIC checks and MPD West and Info NCIC checks. Still quite a bit of listening but sound quality is still not great due to the simulcasting.

Actually the Federal installations started out on the 400 MHz band, but thier are VHF, and 800 systems in use also, and the newer systems are 380 MHz TRS's now. Most are Moto, though a few are M/A-Com, and the newer are most likely going to be the new EFJ P-25 TRS. Its also not to strange considering a few of the Fed instalations are using local TRS's... For example- The USCJ, USCBPS, on the Charleston County, SC TRS.
