I THINK that is a tracking system they use to locate stolen cars but I might be wrong.

LoJack has arrived in Memphis. I saw some Bartlett cars with them also.

Anyone heard any further info about the sale of the 800 MHz system from Memphis to Shelby County? I understand the Iden engineers are in town surveying exsisting infrastructure for the new MPD/MFD system. After waiting all this time, they decide on another NEW system that we can't monitor.

I'm not sure where you're hearing this from, but it's incorrect. A memo was issued last week from a Deputy Chief at the Fire Department advising the Motorola radio swap-over should begin at the end of May. The memo also stated that the hold-up has been the fact that Motorola was getting some bugs and programming issues worked out.

Well, I hope my source is wrong. Can't imagine that you could dream something like that up. Maybe someone is after Motorola's business since it took them so long to implement?????? Anything is possible.

I recall Shelby County announcing years ago that they were purchasing a Motorola system and up popped the full EDACS system a few months later. I believe there was an issue in the bidding procedure and GE protested.

OK, I will set my clock. It is April now. Motorola is going to be ready for the FD June 1rst. I'll give them a day.

My money says a year unless the rumor is true that their agreement with the city is going away.

Ahhh so your'e saying that you think it might be a year before we get it all up? I hope it's not gonna be that long.Do you mind telling us who you are hearing this from? If you don't,thats fine, but I have read and talked to a good few folks in the loop, and I haven't heard anything like that.Like you said though, they can bid out to whoever they want,if this one is not right, contracts, deadlines, the operability of the system,etc...

I've seen the MPD cars with the 4 smaller black antennas, too. I was wondering about that. It seems like I've only seen them so far on the traffic units that patrol 240.

IDEN techs?

Perhaps the "IDEN techs" that are surveying the Memphis system towers are from Nextel or SouthernLink, and they are going through one of the phases of rebanding 800MHz. Tennessee is part of Wave 2 in the nationwide rebanding scheme, which has started with negotiations and public safety taking inventory of what they have. They may also be looking at installing some kind of link with the new Motorola system to certain Nextel users and talkgroups. Remember, TVA a couple years ago signed a BILLION+ contract with Nextel to provide their communications for ten years. And many federal agents use Nextel. It would also make sense to provide some kind of link under the guise of "interoperability." Just a thought or two.

It is LoJack. They are putting them on the cars of many agencies.
There is a small control panel on the inside of the car that will show the location of a stolen car on a compass looking display.

THEY ARE UUUGGGGLLLY!

It is amazing to me that LoJack is still in business with GPS technology out there. I also find it interesting that anyone would pay for the system so they can get their car back which is, in actuality, owned by the insurance company. Isn't that what insurance is for? They are the ones who should be paying for LoJack, not the consumer.

LoJack used to operate on some freqs around 170 Mhz when it became operational in the late 70's, early 80's. Not sure where they are today.

Insurance companies make enough money as it is. Why help them out by spending your own money on LoJack?????????

So....it's maybe just me.....but I'm wondering if this technology has been around since the late 70's or early 80's....and Memphis is like in the top 10 cities with auto thefts.....WHY IS MPD JUST NOW GETTING IT!!!!!!!

Maybe they aren't. If you go to LoJack's home page, TN is not a state that offers coverage. Plus, if you do a dealer search in the Memphis Metro area, there are "0" dealers listed.

Trust me, it is LoJack. They are just getting the units installed in the police cars now.

I don't think it would do much good to sell it before they have a way to recover the cars after they are stolen.

I agree that GPS technology seems to be better, and I am suprised that they are moving to Memphis also.

Well everyone, start listening in good this comming week to the new system.

East and South Precincts should come on the air followed by two more Precincts each week. After that is all said and done, MFD should start comming on the air.

Shelby Co. Fire already has their handhelds and they've had them for a while now, they are just waiting for an OK to start using them. They'll use the handhelds for a while to make sure everything's working properly then start switching out mobiles.

Keeps ur scanners on and ears open!!!

Control Channel Mode vs. Talkgroups

I'm using the Butel software for my Uniden 796 and 396 radios. I've been listening using Control Channel mode but if more precincts are beginning to go on the air, could someone remind me the advantages/disadvantages of using the talkgroups programmed vs. control channel mode? I'd prefer programming the talkgroups and choosing the ones I want to listen to. Does my question make sense?
Thanks.
Ron

The advantages would be you would only hear what you programmed. If you leave it in Control Channel only mode, you'll pick up everything that goes on regardless of what it is.

I have a Pro-2096 so mine is a little different but I have all mine programmed into 4 banks. Bank 1 is SC Sheriff, Bank 2 is MPD, bank 3 is SC Fire and bank 4 is MFD. That way I can turn off any agency I don't want to listen too.

The downside to this is if you dont put in any talkgroups that you may be interested in you won't hear them. With the CC only mode, you'll heard everything that happens so you less likely to miss anything.......lol do I make sense???

Just program up the talkgroups you want to listen to and scan them and you should be ok.

A reminder though, the control channels will change in the future after the migration to the new system is finished. If you look up a little ways in this thread, Neal has them laid out of what they will be in the future.

Let me know if you need any more help...

Okay I kind of confused my self on the above comment so I talked with Neal who is a wiz with the Unidens.....

If you have the talkgroups programmed in that you want to listen too, and are in the control channel only mode, put the scanner in ID SCAN mode to scan only those talkgroups you have input into the scanner.

If you put the scanner in ID SEARCH mode it will scan all talkgroups on the system. You don't want to use this one.

Use the ID SCAN mode but you have to have the talkgroups you want to listen too programmed in the scanner.

Hope this clears it up a little bit.
