I've got the fire frequencies for the new system programed and I get police traffic on them, I've checked to make sure that all the frequencies are right, and they are....so my question is......Is this why there is a hold up for the memphis fire switch or will it fix it's self once the switch happens and gets up and running???

That's the problem they've been having all this time. Still can't get it right. The Smartzone is causing it. It's working correctly, but it's not what Memphis wanted.

rbts: No Downtown yet. So their are three left. Downtown, Northeast, and Southeast.

My Stupid Mistake!

Thomas--
Thanks for your help on the active talk groups. I found one of my errors and I'm admitting my stupidity publicly in case it may help someone else. Many of my talkgroups and channels were locked out, even so I wasn't picking up much of the traffic. I discovered it accidentally when I manually rotated through the channels. I had locked them out when I had the old channels programmed and was picking up the encrypted noise. So, if any of you have trouble check the obvious first. Reminds me of the time I worked for days trying to get a printer to work. Finally figured out, the cable wasn't plugged in. Every time I pulled it out to work on it the cable would come out, I'd fix it, but it would come out again when I pushed the printer back to the wall.

Just to let every know MFD made a General Announcement over the Vocals on May 9 2006 stating that the Radio change over was postponed until further notice.

No explanations were given or any other information

It would really be interesting to know the inside story on the MPD/Shelby County system. I can't imagine that a privately owned company would have problems like this. The likes of FedEx, etc. implement these systems frequently. I can assure you it doesn't take one or two years to make their systems work.

Further, what is the difference between the MLGW system and this one? MLGW didn't seem to have the problems that the city has had.

There must be a logical explanation.

BOLO Ice Cream Truck

I'm so happy to be listening to MPD again. Otherwise, I wouldn't know about the carjacking of the ice cream truck tonight on Knight Arnold.

I'm with you Ron. I heard an officer spot a stolen car in Central this afternoon. He couldn't catch up with it. Later, another officer saw it, followed it and it parked in front of a residence. The young officer did an incredible job of moving other cars into position to block the street, then got out of his car on the street behind the house, walked around the corner and snatched the knucklehead.

Everyone involved in the upgrade wishes it was finished. We have had numerous issues crop up namely the Smartzone radios that we knew would be a problem but someone in their infinite wisdom convinced the non rf people in the city to buy that function. The most recent wrench in the works is the fact that the XTS5000's are locking up when regrouped. As I understand it, we are one of the few systems around that routinely dynamically regroups radios. This problem with the XTS's is a new one to Motorola and it is being aggressively addressed. The CAD vender for the FD has had some issues with how the CAD system tells the radio system which radios to regroup. Both of these FD related items just came to light after finally getting the Smartzone issue worked out and being able to come up with the programming for the FD radios. I wish the city had the money like Fedex to use on technology, I can assure you we have not been sitting around twiddling our thumbs trying to get these issues resolved and I am proud of what we have fought to correct.

Thank You!

Thanks for the update and explanation. I'm sure everyone appreciates it as I do. I wish you luck in getting the bugs worked out of the system.

I have another question.....Is the audio on the MPD talk-groups in the final configuration? Earlier, it was stated that they were patched from the old system thus causing the issues with audio.

Do we have the final product now? My Uniden 396T seems to be all over the place in terms of hearing a good signal. Sometimes I hear transmissions fairly clear and other times the digital artifacts are so pronounced you can barely copy what is being said.

Just trying to figure out if it is solely the problem of my receiver or is there still changes coming along for the audio.

Thanks again for answering.

There are still several patches from the old to new system. Those patches do not have the audio quality as single system comms. A lot of officers have commented that the audio is better on the new system and I think so too. As far as non-batwing receivers go, from what I have heard the Unidens don't handle the d to a conversion as well.

MPD Radio Codes/Talkgroup?

Tonight I heard a North Precinct car ask the dispatcher if another car could switch to "Intel 6". I don't see that in any of the talkgroups. Any idea what this one is? It's probably programmed into the radio this way and listed on RR as something else.
Thanks.

How many radios do we have out there that can hear the APCO-25 modulation? I know there is a Radio Shack, the Uniden 396T. Any others. Has anyone been able to compare the audio between the Radio Shack and the Uniden? I have listened to the live scanner feed which I think is a Radio Shack and the digital artifacts are there but it does seem to do a little better job of decoding the audio vs. my Uniden.

If anyone has used both radios, it would be interesting to see plus/minus for each.

Radioshack only has two, the Pro-96 and Pro-2096(base). Uniden, of course, has the 396t, the new 996t will work, the 796D, 785D, 296D, and the 250d with digital card will all work with this new system.

Yes, the feed is using a Pro-2096. Reception has alot to do with the audio quality, regardless of the brand of scanner. I have changed the antenna setup on the scanner and it's 100% better. Just from moving it a couple of feet.

Comparing the two, the Radioshack digital scanners have much better audio than the Unidens. Their AGC is better also. I've heard both and for audio quality, it's the Pro-96/2096 all the way.

This afternoon on the way home MPD S. East (AIRWAYS STA) was up on the new system and this morning MPD N. East (APPLING FARMS STA) was online just for a second and then went back off. I noticed the audio on the S. East precint didn't sound that great...it sounded muddy like a patch.
