A 38-year-old Grand
Junction woman died instantly in a head-on crash Tuesday afternoon on
32 Road after the car she was driving was hit by heavy machinery being towed on a trailer behind a truck, according to the Colorado State Patrol.
Monique Velasquez was traveling south in her 1994 Eagle Summit when her vehicle was pushed backward about 30 feet by a Bobcat on a trailer towed behind a northbound 2004 Ford F-350 driven by Daruis Devries, 67.
State Patrol Sgt. Gaylon Grippin said the truck’s trailer was seen fishtailing, and it appears Velasquez had stopped on the bridge over the Colorado River to avoid a crash, but her vehicle still was struck by the Bobcat.
“It looks like she did everything she could before it hit,” Grippin said.
The State Patrol is investigating the incident, and charges may be pending, Grippin said.
Traffic was stalled south of D Road for about three hours after the 1:30 p.m. crash. Pieces of debris from the crash were launched over the guardrail and landed on a riverbank below.
Velasquez was extricated from the smashed vehicle by members of Clifton Fire Protection District. Both drivers were wearing their seat belts, Grippin said.
Eric Terry was one of a number of people at nearby Corn Lake State Park who stopped to view the crash scene.
“It’s a bad scene,” Terry said. “It looks like Bigfoot went over (her car.)”
