Freq 856.3375 is 'open' continually and my scanner will not scan
past it. It was like this 2 weeks ago, last week it was ok for a
few days and now the problem has returned. Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks, Charlie

Lock it out. I do this with channels that annoy me. In case the situation resolves itself later, I periodically "unlock all", and then relock the channels that still have a problem.

Thank you. This is what I've done....I just wondered if anyone knows what' happening.

I have been having this problem too. If you lock it out though, you are skipping an active channel. Even though it is constantly open, they still brodcast over it and their (Mesquite) radios seem to hunt like they should. I have a feeling that something has changed with their network. 856.3375 used to be their primary, does anyone know if that has changed?

It was ok until about 9a today and now it again has a problem....this happens once in a while and always to the same freq.

Is this a SmartZone system that you're monitoring?

The reason I ask.. Motorola released new firmware in January 2003 that fixed this issue. The quantar (repeater) sticks open and does not unkey, until one of two things take place:

- A digital talkgroup is assigned to this voice channel
- The quantar is reset

Some trunk tracking scanners (The uniden 235/245 series) get stuck on these open "carriers" and will not return to the control channel unless you manually hit "scan".

Real trunking radios and other trunk-tracking scanners revert back to the control channel.

What's happening is the controller is telling the radios (via the data channel) to switch to channel # xxx. xxx is the stuck channel. Since no voice activity is present, and no sub-audible data is present (opens your squelch normally) the user hears a rapid clicking noise, as the radio switches from control channel, to voice channel. Some trunk trackers just stay on the frequency and will not revert to the control channel.

If the problem I described above is applicable to Mesquite, they really should be talking with Motorola to obtain the new firmware..

Good lord no this is not a Smartzone system! It is a 5 channel Smartnet system.

In any case, this is probably nothing more than a piece of electronic equipment in the house or close to the radio that is causing a birdie to be broadcast on the freq.

Isolate the source of the carrier.... and everything should be ok after that.

I noticed something similar on the NE Tarrant system.
The highest channel 868.7875 has had a carrier for several days now.
When I put my headphones on I can hear a low frequency data buzz
that sounds just like the 1/2 second or so disconnect signal on a voice
channel, except it is continuous. My PRO95 won't display anything
on this channel and otherwise everything else is normal.
I have heard it do this several times in the past.

In Older Radio shack Scanners, you can Lock out all the Active channels and still monitor the Trunk. I listened to Mesquite last nite with no noticable issues.

I wonder though if Mesquite is changing there system?

Mesquite Upgrading

The City just purchased/received a large quantity of XTS 5000's for Public Service use. The site/control point equipment is also being upgraded and interoperability agreements with other agencies have been made.

I understand that P16 is in the future  and we may infer that from the interoperability agreements that the new infrastructure may support some SmartZone capabilities.
