This name change will be quite noticeable for those who regularly listen to MetCom. Effective January 1, 2021 MetCom will be referred to as "Dispatch" on the radio and all MetCom talkgroups will be called "SMF" talkgroups.
Background -
MetCom was established in late 2005 and went in-service in 2006 as a communications authority. The concept was to create a regional fire and medical public safety answering point that remained independent. Throughout MetCom's history, services were provided for suburban fire districts including South Metro, Parker, Englewood, Cunningham and Littleton. Rural fire districts continue to contract for service including Bennett-Watkins, Byers, Deer Trail, Sable Altura, Strasburg and West Douglas. In 2016 MetCom's authority model was disbanded when the two oversight boards, South Metro and Parker, officially merged their independent legal fire districts into one. At that time all MetCom personnel became South Metro employees, but the operation remained largely the same. Beginning January 1, 2021 an organizational change will result in the components of MetCom being split up under two of South Metro's Divisions. Emergency Communications (Dispatch) will fall under Operations while Information Technology, Analytics and GIS will fall under Support Services.
With those organizational changes and MetCom no longer intact as it historically was, the decision was made to retire the name.
