Searchers recover body of young father who fell into river

ENGLEWOOD - As SKY9 hovered above, rescue crews pulled the body of a man from the South Platte River early Tuesday morning.

Englewood Police along with search and rescue crews worked well into the evening Monday in an attempt to recover the young father who'd fallen into South Platte River at around 7:30 p.m.

Police said the 28-year-old father lost his footing while trying to rescue his sons from the current of the river.

The man was enjoying the river with his 4-year-old son and 9-year-old stepson as well as a 14-year-old babysitter when the current became too strong for the children.

The man, whose name has not been released, attmepted to help the two boys who were in the water and struggling. He quickly lost his footing and was not seen again until crews recovered his body Tuesday just after 7 a.m.

Three dive teams had searched the river for more than two hours by 10 p.m. Monday and resumed the search early Tuesday morning.

A helicopter was also assisting with the search on Monday night.

It is legal to swim in the area, but authorities say it is "swim at your own risk."
