MHP Unit Designations

With MHP, your same system basically as the County SO's applies:
Each District is assigned a Troop that is its primary patrol units:
District 1-Troop C: HQ-Jackson
District 2-Troop D: HQ-Greenwood
District 3-Troop E: HQ-Batesville
District 4-Troop F: HQ-New Albany
District 5-Troop G: HQ-Starkeville
District 6-Troop H: HQ-Meridian
District 7-Troop J: HQ-Hattiesburg
District 8-Troop K: HQ-Gulfport/Biloxi
District 9-Troop M: HQ-Brookhaven
At least two other types of designations exist :
Troop P, and Troop R.

To my knowledge

there are no "Troops P & R."

Unit designations that begin with "P" are radio techs and maybe other type techs; not sworn, academy graduate troopers.

As to unit designations that begin with "R," some of these are sworn, academy graduate troopers [the lower numbers like R-5, R-19, etc.] who are involved with drivers license administration, breathalizer certification and the like. Numbers such as R-90 are the unsworn, nonacademy drivers license personel who are at the DL stations.

"B" designations

Unit "B" is the head of the MHP Criminal Invetigators for the state. Recently, this sub-agency formerly known as Criminal Investigation Bureau ("CIB"), now is known as Mississippi Bureau of Investigation ("MBI"). The investigators thereunder are now known as either "Special Agents" (those holding the rank of Master Sergeant and above) or Agent (those not holding the rank of at least Master Sergeant); no matter all Agents are sworn, MHP academy graduates formerly road Troopers.

Their designations depend on in which district they work. Using MHP District 9 - Brookhaven as the example:

MBI Lieutenant [always district MBI commander] is B -19; (9 is far his district); all other MBI agent are B - *9, whether Special Agent or Agent. For instance the MBI Lieutenant for Hattiesburg would have unit designation of B - 17.

FYI MHP Distrct 9 MBI are: B-19, Lieutenant Allen Applewhite; B - 29 Agent John Stolle; B-39 Special Agent Lane Pattie; and B-49 Special Agent Gerald Wall. We just have 4.

MEMA has no unit designation in the DPS radio system.


If and when they get on the DPS radios, they will use their MEMA number.

If I'm not mistaken "A" units are the administrative units around Jackson, not nescasarly(sp) statewide.

I was told A-Adam was the governor, A-1 is Commissoner, etc.

In years past

and today, the Governor is either unit "1" or, more likely, "MHP - 1"

Unit "A" now is the Col. of MHP; Commissioner of Department of Public Safety is "5"

I do know that much.

The Governor is Unit-1, the Lt. Governor is Unit-2.

The Commissioner of the DPS is "A" or "A-Adam"

The Colonel is A-01, the Lt. Col. is A-02.

There is no A-03.

Northern District Major is A-04 (District 2-4)
Central District Major is A-05 (District 1, 5, 6)
Southern District Major is A-06 (District 7-9)

Internal Affairs Officers hold A-unit designations, also; along with others which I am not certain. For example, I know one that is a reconstructionist, but not all reconstructionists have A-unit numbers (not sure on that one).

B-units are MBI
L-units are Crime Lab
N-units are Unsworn Driver Services
P-units are Communications
R-units are Sworn Officers over Driver Services (registrations and special inspections)
S-units are Executive Protection
W-units are MHP Air Operations
X-units are Homeland Security
