Does anyone know if the state ended up changing the scanner law to where we don't need a permit? There was talk about it in the spring.

I just updated my permit with a change of address and it was sent in and back within a week, so I don't think it has changed.

It passed the House (105/0), but never made it to the Senate. It was referred to the committee on judiciary on 5/18/2005 and hasn't moved since. As currently written, it has too many potential loopholes that make it dangerous...at face value, it looks great...but be careful of what you ask for! It definately has the "right idea", but it needs to be better worded to prevent inappropriate penalties.

As the current laws stands, the permits should still be getting issued. The permit can be printed from this site:

If/when HB 4544 passes, I believe the permits will become obsolete. I had no problem getting mine issued, and it doesn't sound like anyone else has either.

I knew a local fireman who was also a Technician Class Amateur Radio operator who had to jump through all kinds of hoops to get a permit to carry a scanner. He had to get the chief of police in every jurisdiction where he might travel to sign his application. But that was some time ago before they changed the law to include all classes of amateur radio license, and also before they made the permit very easy to get. My wife got one a couple of years ago just because she "occasionally drives husband's vehicle equipped with 2-way radio gear."

There is no charge to get a Scanner Permit. You will not be denied just because you are an Amatuer Radio Operator. Just simply go to the link below and fill it out and mail it in, and usually within a few weeks you will have the permit. I have had mine for almost 11 years now and have never had a problem in anyway shape or form!!!

Applied for my permit about a month ago and got it back in 4 days. No fee, no jumping through hoops etc... I am also a Amateur operator and had zero problems getting one. A co-worker of mine also got one in the same 4 days turn-around time.

I got pulled over for an unrelated cause, saw my scanner and wanted to see my permit. the officer didn't believe that my permit was real. He had never seen one before. It looked kinda cheap and "not official". I think the state should do a better job at making them look "official".

Well my feeling is that if I have a permit that I can physically show to an officer, then I may be better off than offending him/her discussing the law that says I don't need one because I am an amateur operator. Being a former Law enforcement officer I know little things can tick them off and then they may be more likely to write you a ticket for whatever they stopped you for. I say, cover all avenues.

Up until just a short time ago you could not get a scanner permit in MI if you were a ham but I saw a post on here that someone just got one and he was a ham.
The cost is perfect so maybe it's time for me to get one also.
