Overall, Florida gets high marks for hurricane preparedness, but a congressman urged an upgrade for the antiquated federal emergency warning system.

MIAMI, Fla. -- Equipped with satellites, computers and other high-tech advancements, the National Hurricane Center has gotten better and better at plotting the path of dangerous tropical systems.

Cell phone networks get easily saturated during emergencies, and possibly during the wind up to major emergencies. It might work for college campuses but I would prefer pager alerts to state and local government emergency management personnel and key media sources. Yes, the media sources need to know too because they can disseminate the message further through radio, TV, and internet.

Sounds like so much double speak and somebody needs to be brought up to speed on how the telecommunication infrastructure works and especially it's inherent flaws. It's just another Bush Monkey legacy that needs to be addressed and shot down before the nation becomes bankrupt from needless spending on flawed plans that will lead to more needless spending to plug all the holes.

Somebody overlooked the simple facts, one being unlike tornadoes, hurricanes give ample warning and few surprises. There is plenty of time to inform the public and plenty of time to prepare, this is yet another Panic Party and the favors are needlessly expensive.

hurricanes dont just appear, this is silly...

there actually used to be all sorts of warning systems down here in miami that have long been retired (diesel sirens anyone? how about low band VHF links to every radio station at the time?)

the systems that are in place work fine, and the media (radio, tv, and even newspapers - these things move slowly) are more than enough to inform everyone... and believe me, the tv news does a great job getting everyone into a panic (coverage sponsored by grocery stores - publix - and the home depot of course)
