C-21s to replace A-10s at Battle Creek base

I don't know if this is good or bad. I love having the A-10's fly right over my house on the way back to Battle Creek. I wounder if the C-21's will do the same thing :)

BATTLE CREEK, Mich. (AP) -- The National Guard Bureau says C-21 cargo and passenger planes will replace the A-10 fighter jets now stationed at the Battle Creek Air National Guard Base.

The C-21s will continue a flying mission for the base until it someday becomes part of the U.S. Department of Defense's Joint Cargo Aircraft program.

The A-10s will shift to Selfridge Air National Guard Base later this year.

It's part of a realignment of military personnel and equipment in Michigan that state officials have been seeking.

U.S. Senator Carl Levin and Governor Jennifer Granholm jointly issued the announcement Monday.

The Democrats lobbied to keep the Battle Creek base open in 2005 after the Defense Department recommended that it be closed.

Went to SANG today. Had Demon 11 flight (3 + 1 ground abort) and Tejas 21 flight (2). Sounded like someone screwed up pretty badly as every aircraft was Code 3 for open COMM panels. Tried to get pics but the weather disagreed.

I saw and heard a KC-135R on final at Selfridge today. They were using the call-sign "Jeep 21 Heavy". I would assume that they are using the call-signs that were used when flying the C-130s. No more "Piston" and "Auto" call-signs?

Callsigns are specific to the unit not the aircraft. So from now on it'll only be Jeep/Motown/Lucky.

By the way I also noticed at least 4 of the aircraft already have the yellow checkerbox paint jobs on the tail.

Heard 'Navy JT 810' landing about 2 hours ago. I dont know much about Navy units but a quick google search tells me it's a VR-52 C-9 from Willow Grove.

It was an ESGR event. It was about a 20 min ride down to the Ambassador Bridge and back.

First picture is actually from Friday. It's Demon 11 climbing vertical from takeoff to 9000 ft. Impressive.

With tomorrow being Memorial Day, they're may be some fly-overs at parades. It might be a good day for listening. Last year on Memorial Day, I was on the patio and two F-16s flew over pretty low going back to Selfridge. Take a minute to remember what Memorial Day is about!!

Indeed, and they usually publish all of the flyover times but so far I havent found any. I fully expect to get woken up at 1000 by 2 F-16s cruising down Dodge Park.

Two parades I know of with flyovers are Dearborn and Farmington. Dearborn will also have some from the Yankee Air Force. Hopefully we will the same in Farmington.

The Dearborn Parade will have a flyover of F-16 fighter aircraft from Selfridge Air National Guard Base, which provides the traditional kickoff signal to start the parade followed by the “Yankee Warrior,” a restored World War II-era B-25D medium bomber, the “Yankee Doodle Dandy,” a restored Douglas DC3/C-47, and a flight of T-6 aircraft. T-6s were flown in World War II, and later used in the Korean War by Tactical Air Controllers of the 5th Air Force. I hope a few of them make it up here to the Waterford Parade also...
