Good Day Folks, My Name is Tom McKelvey and I have just recently been forced to dip my toes into the wide world of Simulcast. I have become proficient at scanner programming as long at the scanner is near a tower. In Michigan, Lenawee county South of Adrian, we have proven dead zones. No signal at all south of Fairfield on M-52 . For areas such as Blissfield, I was able to use Monroe county towers and Lenawee Talk Groups to set up scanners and it works quite well. However, I have not been able to utilize Ohio Towers in Fulton or Lucas County to do the same. What am I missing? I would think since they are simulcast as we are that the same concept would work that I haven been using with surrounding Michigan counties...Any assistance would be awesome. Thanks

Im kind of new at this so please bare with me.

These are the freqs, for Michigan

So if MARCS is not Simulcast is it possible for the Michigan fire guys to still talk to them across state lines? I know they do so this is why I felt they were Simulcast with Lenawee.

MARCS has many simulcast sites. They aren't labeled as such, but if you look at the site information link, they have multiple transmitter locations listed for a single site. MPSCS also uses simulcast for many of its sites, so if you're not using a SDS scanner you're probably going to have issues receiving one or both systems.

I was using a 996P2 and was picking up Fulton County site very well, but when I removed their talked groups and add Lenawee County is when I ran into trouble. Ultimately I helped one lady with 20 foot tower and a Yagi to reach downtown Adrian using an SDS. Wow they are sweet. I will be purchasing one soon.

Yes, that's called interoperability, talkgroups are usually labeled interop.

Interop is one reason P25 is so popular with Public Safety. I understand DHS hands out grants for systems that are interop with P25.

This has nothing to do with simulcast. Read up on simulcast here Simulcast - The RadioReference Wiki

What do you have for gear (radio, antenna, coax), what talk groups do you know about , what can't you hear? The guys in Indiana might talk on TG 1176 or your guys may talk on a similar TG in Indiana. If its a Indiana TG then their MARCS site & TGs also has to be programmed into your radio.

These might interest you.

I've heard some of the Lenawee fire guys "switch over" when they go to runs in Ohio. I've heard them on the NW Ohio system, but not on their normal talkgroups for the MPSCS (nor would I expect to). Usually the local fire talkgroups on the NW Ohio System. Morenci Fire actually has a talkgroup listed on the NW Ohio System for Fulton County.

If you were hearing Fulton County and now suddenly don't, my guess is the problem is in your programming somewhere. Try making a small scan list with just Fulton County and go from there. I can't hear the Fulton site from here, but I can usually hear the Lucas Simulcast.

Great thanks for the info. Are there any other settings I should consider for the best reception when programming this site?
