Michigan State Police propose patrol post closures

The Michigan State Police have announced a cost cutting move proposed by Gov. Jennifer Granholm that would save the state $1.1 million dollars, by closing a few of their facilities.

Under the proposal, the following posts would be closed:

Grand Haven
Groveland Detachment (Oakland County)
Iron River

It's not immediately clear how the post closures will affect the public, but for those requesting police services from the MSP, it will mean that a patrol car from another nearby post will have to respond. Hopefully, other state police posts will not be added to this list!

do they really respond from the post, or are they out patrolling the same roadways that they patrolled before the closure. Some agencies are finding that with take home cars and mdt terminals that there is not a need for lineup before going on duty. All updated information is sent via the mdt when they come on duty.

Some agencies are finding that by using a system called PCAM, or patrol car allocation model, that you no longer have 3 shifts, but people come on duty to time with demand so with 50 officers you could have 10 or 12 reporting times to keep the people on the street when needed.

Closing State Police Post would and could work, but the Michigan State police would have to do what the Indiana State police do.
1. Troopers live in the area they patrol and not in the area of the post they work out of.
2. Each Trooper has a car assigned to them and takes it home.
3. In Indian The Troopers take their arrested suspects directly to the County Jail, they do not take them to the post , Michigan would need to do that.
4. As in Indiana the troopers would make out all paperwork, reports and etc in their patrol.
5. Also as in Indiana, the troopers would only go to the posts for weekly meetings, briefings, and/or traning.
This works in Indiana because the troopers spend very little time at the State Police posts.

But if the Michigan State Police would keep operating the way they do now and close post, the trooper would be spending alot of their time, driving 50 to 60 miles to a state police post. In Indiana a State police Police Post covers anywhere from 4 to 8 counties.

You got to remember, our current Governor has not really pro-active when it comes to the Michigan State Police and it's amount of manpower. Just look at how many Troopers the Michigan State Police had, when the Governor took Office, now look how many troopers we have now! Indiana. Il., Wi., and Oh., all have cut back on the numbers of State Troopers each State has but none of them have cut back as many troopers as Michigan.

It is more popular to cut poeple than fix a system. As for the county jails they belong to the county and are subject to county rules not state desires (unfunded mandate)

Under MICHIGAN LAW if the state mandates anything to a city or county or any other enity the state must supply the money ( ie Michigan's unfunded mandate law)

The State Police Prisoners have always been jailed in the County Jails. State Police Posts don't have cells.

Only if the county will accept them. I can hear a lot of times in the Detroit Metro area that they won't. They can and often do reject them.

I was told no state police posts in michigan over night holding cells, where are the state police now putting the prisoners. I was told by a retired trooper that all posts take their prisoners to county jails. Was this retired trooper wrong?

54 has a holding cell for intox. subjects, and to hold subjects for questioning.

Other than that, 54 units working in Berrien county take their prisoners to BCJ.

Over 40 years ago, the Indiana State Police had a lot more districts than they do now. In addition, for economic reasons, the number of patrol posts have been reduced and the geographical size they cover has increased over the decades. This method has been a national trend among most state law enforcement agencies. However, this has not been the case in Michigan.

Over the years, the number of state police posts in Michigan has remained the same or in some cases, the number of patrol posts in each county has been two or more. While the Michigan State Police have been around since 1917, and felt the best way to establish an effective presence in the community was to have numerous posts throughout the state. Moreover, there has been no move to downsize the number of buildings, which costs the state and taxpayers alike a lot of money to maintain each year. I really feel that if several of the posts were closed and operated from the district level across the state, would be economically advantageous. However, I am all for increasing the number of Troopers throughout the state with the money that will be saved in the long-run.

That's how it is up in Traverse City. The State Police (71 Post) take arrestees to either the Grand Traverse County or Leelanau County jails, depending on what county they're in.

Thanks, I really thought that was true! One of the troopers that told me that is a 20 year vetran of the Michigan State Police and his late Father was a Retired Post Commander and a 25 year plus vetran of the Michigan State Police

Hopefully they won't be closed in the long-run, but if they are it would make sense from an economical viewpoint.
