Another instance of Motorola (and its slobbering devotees) rejecting a possibly good radio system (no, I don't know the type system that was replaced) with an 800-mhz system./QUOTE]

Another instance of someone who failed to find out any information, before they started talking.
Middlebury PD went from Low Band to VHF. They bought a Mobile coverage system and are well aware of what they got.
Middlebury went out to bid for a VHF simulcast system, they got 2 bids back at 1.X million dollars and they got 1 that didn’t come close to the bid specs at 700k.
They picked the best bid for them and went to the town folks to get the money, The vendor that came in at 700k and lost spent thousands of dollars taking out adds in the news paper to tell the residents they were getting ripped off, so at the vote it got shot down completely, no one got the bid.
The town had some money already put aside for the PD to upgrade so they took that and put up a single site VHF system with a back up and generator power.
Now the PD wants to finish out the system they need and they have to rattle the sabers to get the towns people behind them to get the money. FD & Public works also would benefit from this as they could also simulcast and get better coverage.
Not everything is as it looks
And anyone that knows about radio systems will tell you that the frequency doesn’t matter.
800 can work just as well as VHF if you build it correctly

Not surprised there are issues if the rest of the PD are using their
radios in the same manner as the Chief:

Using the radio on your hip with a speaker mic is not exactly the best way to ensure consistently clear transmissions.

Not true at all. Many new systems up here in CT were built to provide 95% coverage 95% of the time with portable on hip with speaker mic.

So if the system is built correctly that is a perfectly acceptable way to use your radio.

Almost all public safety users operate with the radio just like that, Public safety personnel need to use both hands in performance of their duties most of the time

I've delt wiht a few depts that would spec ABC, get the quote/cost for ABC but only able to spend/afford XYZ....then demanding why they didn't get an ABC system. I had one department spread the upgrade over 3 years and was told that each year the cost would go up x% each year and would be cheaper to do it in one shot. They opted to do it over three years due to the town fathers not wanting to have "sticker shock" even though they would pay more.

Such is the way things are.
