From the Milwaukee area, I mostly am hearing refueling traffic as flights arrive from either Volk or Langley (F-22's) to get gas before the fighting starts. I also heard the F-22's on 315.85. I could hear some of the fighting, but it mostly moves East to West and I lost it on my mobile scanner once they got farther and lower.

I took a trip out to Volk yesterday and there is non-stop radio traffic. In addition to the FAA frequencies for Volk, the main frequencies I heard are:
Phoenix: 346.525
Red Primary: 255.7
Blue Primary: 286.4
Refueling: 291.9 and 320.9

The early traffic yesterday was two Marine F-35s doing close air support practice on 319.025 before the main exercise kicked off.

During these are any vhf mil air used or heard? Meaning 138 144.. not the usual 108-138

If you are speaking about the "primary" mil bands like 138-144MHz, 148-149MHz, and 150.05-150.8MHz, I have not heard anything yet.

How far can you typically pick up Military air? I do have my BC125AT and have a Jpole in the attic of the house but have never tried it since it has another type of connector that I have to get an adapter for, but I have heard airplanes on my mobile antenna from as far as Chicago and I live in Waukesha

I'm near Cedarburg and fairly high up, and I can hear the tankers and jets refueling over Sheboygan and Manitowoc and out over Lake Michigan. I can also hear the fighters as they start to work their way west from there until they get too low. That's about 60-80 miles I guess.

FYI, here's an incomplete list of callsigns I've heard this week:
  • Kong, Trick - 58 FS from Eglin, tail code EG, F-35A
  • Upset, Jeep - 128 ARW from Milwaukee, KC-135, flying from MKE
  • Ranger41 - VMGR-23 from Fort Worth, KC-130J, flying from MKE & MSN (once) to refuel Wake flight
  • Wake - VMFA-211 from Yuma, AZ, tail code CF, F-35B
  • Magic - AATC from Tucson, AZ, tail codes AT & FM (educated guess)
  • Rack, Spad - 94 FS from Langley, VA, F-22, flying from home base
  • Zipgun - 179 FS from Duluth, MN, F-16, flying from home base
  • Tigre - 162 FW from Tucson, AZ, tail code AZ, F-16
  • Vodka - 71 FS from Langley, VA, tail code FF, T-38
  • Indy, Mash - 434 ARW from Grissom ARB, IN, KC-135, flies from home
  • Bucky, Talon? - 176 FS from Madison, tail code WI, F-16, Talon flies from Volk, Bucky from Madison
  • Atac - ATAC, the contracted aggressor force flying ex-French Mirage F1's
  • Happy - 126 ARW from Scott AFB, IL, KC-135, flying from home base

After a couple more days at Volk Field, I have an update on active frequencies.

As before, most of the air-to-air action is on these three:
  • 346.525 (Phoenix)
  • 255.7 (Red side)
  • 286.4 (Blue/Cobalt side)

I've picked up several frequencies with conversations between aircraft within the same group. These assignments may change:
  • 124.175 (unknown/uncertain)
  • 229.125 (Kong - Eglin F-35A)
  • 274.3 (unknown)
  • 280.375 (Wake - Yuma F-35B)
  • 343.75 (Trick - Eglin F-35A)
  • 363.35 (Judge - Madison F-16)
  • 374.3 (Spad - Langley F-22)
  • 379.425 (Rage - Eglin F-35A)

There are usually three aerial-refueling tankers. These frequencies have been active:
  • 276.5
  • 291.9
  • 320.9

Lastly, fueling operations on the ground are on 163.5125 and 252.8 is an "Ops" frequency. Enjoy!

An update on tanker frequencies. I had 343.75 mis-characterized until I listened this morning. Here is my latest list for tankers:

Over Rib Mountain
  • 276.5
Over Sheboygan
  • 291.9
  • 320.9
  • 343.75
  • 348.65? (not sure of location)
This morning, the early tankers were one KC-135 over Rib Mountain, another KC-135 over Sheboygan, and a KC-130 over Sheboygan. The late tankers (after the fighting) were one KC-135 over Sheboygan and another over Lake Michigan (they call the area Sheboygan East). That's five tankers for a morning of flying!

They ran a racetrack pattern oriented roughly east-west between Stevens Point and Wausau, so just north of the Volk East MOA, turning over Stratford in the west and Rosholt in the east.

I can't even remember there was a day I didn't hear much overhead with on and off rain. ..Don't think I listened on that day? Friday I passed thru Juneau-Wood by Hardwood on way to Tomah. The Tomah Truck Stop Kwik trip had a huge convoy of Army there. One guy had uhf? Ht on him I think it said vertex standard. I now wish I had asked if that was a base radio? Or for talking in his convoy.

Based on the flights I've seen on ADSB, I think all the fighters have left except for the 58th FS from Eglin - their press release indicated they would be at Volk through the 26th. Looks like there will still be action and radio traffic this week.

I've had good success with just a 2mtr 440 long higher gain mag mount in garage with mil in my area. Didn't expect to work wonders. But most days I hear most of them over head. Used to be a vehicle antenna but the mag on it was terrible and fell off trunk going down road got banged up so I use it for listen only now. Must be why folks are pro drill the hole nmo mounts 😆
