I am currently residing at Stony Brook University, and recently got a MilAir capable scanner. The thing is, I am curious as to how much I will hear on Long Island. At most so far I have heard some aerial refueling and that's about it. I have frequencies programmed in for the Coast Guard, aerial refueling and the ANG unit based out of West Hampton I think, plus a bunch of other various military frequencies. I was wondering what types of things other people are hearing and also if anybody has like a military listing solely for Long Island, and before you point to any websites or yahoo groups, I am already members of quite a few different MilAir yahoo groups, and have done extensive searching on this, which is how I got the Coast Guard and the ANG and refueling frequencies. Any help or input would be greatly appreciated, and I know the best thing for Mil Air is a good antenna but living in a dorm without a way to mount anything outside leaves me without much of an option to place a good antenna. The best reception I get is with the stock ducky and the scanner sitting right next to the window and as soon as I move it more in the room the reception goes to almost nothing. Again, thanks for any help or input in advance.

well first, good luck in school and study hard!!! The set-up you have is very difficult indeed. The stock antenna will only pull in very close transmissions. Without an outboard antenna with height, this is the expectation. I know because I am in the same situation in my listening post. I have improved my air listening buy getting air band specific antennas, one by maldol and one by watson which increases range. Good luck with mil air as on long island I think its limited and selective when they are active.

M,
I was hoping by now there would have been some helpful frequency suggestions, but I will add my $0.02 here:

Not being up on Mil-Air listening, I was hoping that maybe you could share the frequencies that you have had some luck with over the Long Island area. To be honest with you, my extent of MilAir listening is nothing more than CAP, and the local Air Shows - even though most of my scanners cover the MilAir bands.

Thanks!

The most that I have heard is some in air refueling, and I got those frequencies from the Maryland MilAir thread in the first post. I have some Coast Guard frequencies as well as that ANG unit I mentioned, and I got those frequencies because of an airshow. If you want I could send you an excel file of what I have.

Of course the better the antenna the better the results (a discone or ScanTenna is a good start, if you can...)...however I would start off by paying attention to the ZNY ARTCC UHF frequencies, and see if you can catch flights moving up the coast from AC or McGuire. These 2 pages have the freqs, and note that the ATA100 listings are typically out of date - use the listings that follow. The ARTCC page was updated in May, so it's likely to be reasonably accurate
