Silent Key
I sat out on the porch with my Pro96 this afternnon from 1:00 PM to 2:30 PM. Randolph was very busy. Constant transmissions to Randolph approach, Randy tower, hangover tower and sequin tower. A few calls to Houston Center on 343.7 from planes coming into the operations area.
Heard an air refueling on 138.475. The initail contact between the tanker and the receiving aircraft were very clear. The receiver was at 22,000 ft and the tanker was going thru 17,000. A few minutes later the receiver advised that they were at his block altitude. The transmissions started to fade after about 10 mintues and got mostly static. I was using a Diamond RH519 ham dualband antenna, 5 1/2 inches long.
Just as it got so hot I had to come back in the house, a private cessna flew into the sequin control area. Several planes tried to call him to leave the area, but none got a response. They did get his tail number so he will get a nice notice from FAA. To bad no Combat Air Patrol planes up to give him a nice escourt.
PS, I was also monitoring the Randolph trunked system, and the scanner stopped on 3 different talk groups many times, but no audio as they must have been digital. In the hour and half I never did hear any audio on the system.
