Hey Splash, did the B-2s come and play at Crypt? I see you logged some REAPER callsigns and 509th traffic.

Hello jvdkieft

I’m not sure if the B-2s were in the Crypt MOA or not, can’t hear much from the north western part of the state unless they are pretty high up. I live on the side of a hill so I think that may play in on reception issue.

Brian (WNOR) may have more information on B-2s in the Crypt MOA.

With you in Urbandale you should be able to hear Crypt MOA, the training route to your west and both Refuel tracks to the south with and outside antenna.

I have a scantenna on the roof and a radio shack (Model: 20-176: $25.00) in the attic . they both seem to work about the same. I also use rg6 coax from radio shack. Don’t use rg58., to much loss in signal strength.
I did however tweak the radio shack antenna slightly by cutting the top element to 12 inches.

Careful... the impedance nazi's will get you!

Wish I could run with RG6, my radios wont load into it. I'm all RG-8 now

My Icom 208h receives exceptionally well in the airband on AM

That's not a easy question, but I'll try. First start by reading the wiki file here; VHF/UHF Military Monitoring - The Radio Reference Wiki

Then read the RR forum under military monitoring here; http://www.radioreference.com/forums/military-monitoring-forum/34869-first-time-listeners.html

Your very close to the Crypt MOA ( Military operations area) It covers a large area of north western Iowa.
Special Use Airspace & Air Traffic Control Assigned Airspace
Frequencies reported to be in use for the Crypt MOA 233.400 and 311.300

You are also close to an air refuel route (AR105) that runs through the MOA
Primary freq 238.900 ,Secondary 320.900 , Entry/Exit 269.000

Should also be able to hear the F-16s from Des Moines.
