Milcom in NYC

Good morning all. I was wonder if anyone can pass any info my way for some milcom action here in nyc. I have 3 scanners and 1 of them is scanning the milband 24/7 and cant come up with any hits. Maybe someone here might be able to point me in the right direction.

I live in Manhattan, have a MilAir capable scanner but only a "Rubber Duckie" antenna. The only time I have heard anything in the MilAir band is when a CAP (Combat Air Patrol) is established over NYC for Presidential movements in the area or the annual UN opening in the fall. Perhaps I'd have better luck with a roof-top antenna but living in an apartment, that is not an option.

When a CAP is established over the city, the in-use frequencies can often be ascertained by looking at the Stick MilAir Thread in the Maryland Forum here on RR.

Hearing milcom almost requires a good outdoor antenna (a discone, ScanTenna, one of the DPD ones...) unless you are lucky enough to be close to an air route or mil base.

There are many possibilities, and all of these are pulled from our wiki and database. Unfortunately some of this info is a little dated, as we lost the ability for the public to see the FLIPs where all this info was stored last year. But much of this should still be good.

For the first link - ignore the FAA data as it's frequently out of date.

Basically what you would be looking for would be offshore flights doing exercises, or flights coming out of places like McGuire going North to work in the MOAs.

You might also want to scan the milcom blog at MT as Larry frequently publishes updates to frequencies you don't see anywhere else.

Hey Daparker & Ka3jjz thanks for the quick replys. You might want to look into one of these antennas cause i live in an apt also so a rooftop antenna wont work for me here.

Coincidentally, I just received a notice from AOPA (I am a private pilot) that a no-fly zone will be in effect in NYC from 4 PM Saturday afternoon to noon on Sunday for a visit by the Pres. When Bush was POTUS, there were more extensive no-fly areas when he was in town then I read for Obama's visit. We'll soon know whether or not there will be a CAP. If so, you'll get some MilAir scanning action this weekend.
