Military Air - confirmed channel

Just a note for anyone who keeps an ear out for Military aircraft.

"Huntress" was talking with the refueling tanker on 234.6000 around 2:00 pm this afternoon.

Yea,
They don't seem to talk a lot. But it is nice to know what channels are active. I am sure some day we will here more then we want to.

I put up a Diamond Discone on the roof (about 25 feet up) over the weekend, and this was the first day I was able to listen in. I have a taller
section of roof (about 35 feet up) but I could not get a cable over to that section without a major hassle, not to mention the hassle of getting a ground back to my ground rod.

Not at all,
I did a search on the web and found a place called R&L Electrinics
in Ohio. They have it for around 78.00 and only charge actual shipping
cost. So I ordered, and UPS ground it was here on day 3.
It was my first order with them, and they were very nice.

Before ordering I built several antenna's to play with.... I even made a discone and it worked great, but for a permenent mount I liked the stainless steel construction, and the hidden coax connection of the Diomond. Plus it has the wip on top for the lower Freq's.

I used a quad shield RG6 cable, and the run is under 25 feet.

If you don't mind me asking, where did you get the discone?

I have a home office, so when I am stuck in the office I can at least listen to the scanner with the roof mounted discone.

If I am on the patio or away from my desk I use the radio shack metal
whip antenna.

I recently purchased a Diamond Discone also but haven't installed it on the roof yet. I was impressed with the quality of construction - the stainless steel and, like you, especially liked the hidden coax to protect from weather. I'll soon see how well it works.

I'm curious though why you used 75 ohm coax rather than 50 ohm. It shouldn't make much difference with the very short coax run of 25 feet but you should be losing something with the 75 ohm stuff.

How hard is it to insatll the coax.

Not hard at all Mo. The antenna accepts a PL-259 connector on the end of your coax so it's just a matter of screwing it on.

I had about 500 feet of the quad shield RG6 left over from a house and I have the crinmpers, and the ends for RG6. I also have a ton of RG6 to BNC adapters left over from a old satelite system.... all in all I figured I'd use what I had instead of buying more.

Plus if you read around some of the radio/antenna sites RG6 is pretty good stuff for scanners. Something about the 50 ohm balance only in a very narrow freq. range, and with a scanner it makes little difference if its 50 ohm or 75 ohm as long as it is low loss cable....

I am sure someone will jump in and explain it better.

That more than explains it. Using materials on hand makes lots of sense and for a short run, any loss is very small.

For receiving purposes, 75 ohm cable is fine, and RG6 Quad Shield is good stuff...I use that for my antenna system from the discone down to the R7100, and I have no problems into 800 MHz. I do plan on putting one of those inline amps on just to boost the 800 a little bit.

In truth, I actually used my Yaesu FT90 at fifty watts through the 75 ohm cable, and there was no problem.
