Quick question for the Uniden tec.. Is the front port on the 996 and the 396xt port a standard mini usb port or is it a special plug? I need to find a 90 degree adapter for the port to make a cleaner install , and do not want to buy a dozen adapters in order to find out. If a standard adapter will work it would be great.

Thanks Ron

No sir that is not a standard usb mini. I have not been able to locate that connector anywhere else but from Uniden on the USB-1 cable. Maybe someone else knows because I also want to get a 90 degree for clean install.

Just as a reminder since no one else has said it directly, The port(s) on all the Uniden DMA Scanners (except the BC-125AT) are Not USB ports. They are a standard (old fashion) RS-232 ports. The BCT15 and BCD996 (both series) have two serial ports. The one on the back is set up for use with an external GPS unit. The one on the front panel is the same connecter as used on the hand held units. It wouldn't hurt my feelings if Uniden used a USB port on their future scanners, but I have several USB to RS-232 converters which use the same chipset as the Uniden USB cable.

The ports on the front of the x96s are not USB or serial. The ports are MQ172X-4PA ports that accept MQ172X-4SA plugs. The cables that plug into these ports terminate as RS-232 serial plugs. The OP is looking for a better way to interface with the port on the front of the 996, and the side of the 396XT.
