So, was anybody here out at the Minnesota State Fair today? I was there and checked out the Minnesota Army National Guard communications vehicles. I was pretty impressed. Surprisingly they had the pre-set frequencies, PL tones, and NAC codes openly displayed. They had Motorola Quantars for VHF, UHF, 800, SINCGARS equipment, etc. The one truck had a tower that extended to over 50 feet, but the bigger truck's tower extended to over 100 feet. The soldier said both stay at the armory near me here in the metro, but they also keep one at Camp Ripley and one in Duluth. I also looked at the dash mount radio in the cab. It was definitely Motorola. I think the sign said it is an APX 7500. I couldn't tell if it was VHF/800, but I suspect that was the two most likely bands.
I did ask if it was returning tomorrow, but the guy said it was at the MSF today only. I was tempted to take a few snapshots, but I sort of got hurried by other family members.
The other sort of interesting thing is there was also a handset in there for a mobile phone. Note, I said actual mobile phone, like it is hardwired to the vehicle, uses vehicle power, and has a vehicle antenna. At first glance I assumed it was GSM and/or CDMA, but maybe it is for SAT-COM.
