Ran across this on Ebay:
TAXI 3DB ANTENNA GAIN COIL 155MHZ - 180MHZ MASTER BLASTER RADIO IN BLACK/CHROME | eBay

Just add this little gem and you instantly increase your gain by 3dB. Too bad its only for Taxi drivers, makes me want to turn in my ham license and buy a Taxi just so I can use one.

Notice the ad says adding this coil will make you power over others and get the job. Wow. I'm definitely going to buy a Taxi now and maybe one of those little gold and red velvet crowns to sit in the back window.

If only they made one for the ham bands, my life would be so much easier.

A 'little knowledge' goes a long way. Especially in the advertising department! I gotta admit, that's the best advertising 'B.S.' I've seen in a while.

Snake oil lubricates the wheels of commerce, if it lubricated brains we just might have something here. OK, a 5/8 wave has gain over a 1/4 wave (the typical taxi antenna) but the feed point (base) impedance rises drastically so an autotransformer (tapped coil) is used. Having 3 leads the bottom goes to ground, the tap is the feed point and the top goes to the antenna. Now I ask you, where is the ground connection? (;->)

Well, nobody ever accused a taxi driver of being a radio tech and radio techs know better. They get paid better too and don't have to hustle for a commission. (;->)

Oh BTW Doc, BS doesn't lubricate, it makes a sticky, rather odoriferous mess. Sorry I laughed, it only made breathing difficult.

A 5/8 doesn't necessarily need a ground connection to the coil, some like the old A/S do and some don't.

I'll bet you probably don't believe in the power of the little gold and red crown either.....

I am NOT getting into the different 'forms'/states of 'B.S.'! Now that's a really nasty thought...

Sell you the golden Gate Bridge for only 10K, a much better deal. You never get something for nothing, if they worked, they would be everywhere.
