For now having a county system that offers complete inter-agency interoperability, I'm listening to a sunken boat/search&rescue case today, and it's a debacle. Command is on TAC18, MedFlight is on "LZ EAST," DCSO is trying to call MedFlight in EMS DISP, units are calling command on FIRE NORTH, and MedFlight cannot converse with USCG because they don't have the VHF marine frequencies preset into their set. Quite a mess. By the way, the talk group they are calling LZ EAST is 14618. I'll send a mass update at the end of the week.

They're searching for a missing boater near Briery Hall Point, on the east shore of the Alligator River. They've spotted debris in the water, and the Dare Medflight helo is searching, along with the CG and Dare County FD. They've called for an off duty firefighter to come in, and bring his dive gear. Most of the action is on the Dare 800 system, a bit from Viper. CG is working on 16 and 22A, but I can't receive them line of sight in Avon. Marine fisheries will have boats on site shortly.

38 year old white male, blue hat, no life jacket. Happened about 1000. They just went into recovery mode. One survivor picked upl.

They are still searching at this point. I was asked to stand by in case they need VHF comms for the Coast Guard helo.

Dare Central was talking to Dare MedFlight on Dare Co P25 TG 14618. MedFlight's radio ID was showing as "0" and they kept referring to the talk group as LZ EAST BACK-UP 5 which leads me to believe that MedFlight was using the LZ EAST talk group on VIPER and was patched into 14618 on Dare Co P25.

Makes sense that when Dare MedFlight leaves the Dare County P25 coverage area, they would use a VIPER wide area talk group, but not sure why they would use it on an incident in Dare Co.

Those are probably simulcast with each other. You will find that Dare has TGs on VIPER that are simulcast such as Fire, Beach Law, and Sheriff, and EMS

Makes sense that when Dare MedFlight leaves the Dare County P25 coverage area, they would use a VIPER wide area talk group, but not sure why they would use it on an incident in Dare Co.

In April of 2011, Dare County public safety personnel were advised that there was a problem with the Dare County helicopter operating on the Dare County trunked system while airborne.

Personnel were advised that the county and Gately Communications (Motorola's vendor for the Dare P25 system) were working to fix the problem.

In the meantime, though, the helicopter would be using the Dare EMS dispatch talkgroup on Viper when in-flight. Flight crews could still be contacted on the Dare County system, though, when the helo was not in operation.

From the posts on this thread, it sounds like the problem may not have been solved.

We tried to run side scan sonar on this incident but the water was way too rough to get a good picture. The body of the boater was recovered, however.
