EAGLE, Colo. -- Authorities were searching for a hiker who disappeared on 14,005-foot Mount of the Holy Cross in western Colorado.

The 54-year-old man, whose name and hometown were not released, was last seen Tuesday when he grew tired and stayed behind while his companions went ahead on the trail, authorities said.

He stopped near tree line, about 2,500 feet below the summit.

Two search and rescue teams, a tracking dog and an Army National Guard helicopter joined the hunt. The dog picked up a scent Wednesday but lost it, Eagle County sheriff's Sgt. Greg Thompson said.

The man had two bottles of water, a health bar and adequate clothing, Thompson said. He was in moderately good health but has a history of high cholesterol, Thompson said.

"The weather hasn't been that devastating so there's a pretty good chance he is (alive)," Thompson said.

In September, 35-year-old Michelle Vanek of Lakewood disappeared on the same mountain after she stopped to rest and her friend went on to the summit. She was never found.

Subject has been located MRA code 1. Arapahoe Rescue was the official find team for the search but as with all search efforts, its a combined effort of multiple teams working together for one common good it is just the team that happens to be lucky enough to come across them in their pattern.
