Missouri MilAir Freqs

Hey guys,

I've been thinking about programming some military freqs into my scanner. Could anyone start me off in the right track for good freqs and maps for the kansas city area? What is it like listening? Thanks for the help!!

Start with B-2's @ Whiteman and various Aerial Refueling units passing thru, it is the most common and the easiest to hear around here. Every weekday and night there is activity.

and I wouldn't ignore the local ARTCC....

go past the FAA listings (that are of questionable value) and look at 'Kansas City Center (ZKC) ARTCC Low Sector UHF - Rework'

I wouldn't ignore the Kansas City airport, if there is one - it's very common for a facility to have UHF milair parallels to the approach, departure and Tower freqs.

All this assumes that you've got a good antenna up in the air, and fed with good quality coax. Indoor antennas will certainly work, but putting them around all that wiring, siding and so forth is going to cost you in terms of signal strength and range.

Okay, so if there's some A-10's cruising around waiting to flyover a chief's game or something, which channels would those be. Keep in mind, I'm new to the military side of scanning

Are these AM or FM, and narrow or wide?

Generally speaking - there are exceptions - freqs in the 138-144 mhz and 225-400 Mhz band are AM. I would bet your local Air National Guard would be the ones doing the flyovers; they should show up somewhere in the 138-144 mhz range for their coordination. I would also keep the KC airport freqs handy - both VHF and UHF - as they will no doubt have to coordinate with the local airspace. It's also possible - depending on their route - they may have to transition into or out of the KC ARTCC area.

Depends on what route they come in on. When they leave Whiteman airspace they will come up on Whiteman Depature 343.65 then ZKC-Sedalia-L 323.15 and as they head west they will get handed off. From this point the freqs used will depend on altitude and route in and which ZKC controller is working which sectors.

I hear them a lot on ZKC-Butler-L 327.0 as they swing south from the stadium and head back east. KC App Control 318.1 and 294.7 as good to watch as well during the actual flyby. MKC Tower freq 257.8 usually does not carry any military stadium traffic unless they are in their airspace while waiting but I would watch it anyway. If they are really high over KC then 360.85,327.0 or 307.075 are all good to try.

Today the flyby @ arrowhead was done by 4x F-16 from Iowa ANG HAWKEYE ##. They were with KC App Control 307.350 and then went to Whiteman App on 284.0 and then off to tower.

Thats what I thought, I just wanted to make sure. My old faithful 2004 defaults to NFM
