A few years ago, APRS 2 meter rigs were easily available, today they are expensive and not easily sourced. I posted that I wanted to set up a digipeater/Igate since I live in a small town with not many active amateur radio resources.
I posted about this and the helpful hints rolled in. One member, mmckenna offered a Motorola GM300 that was surplus to his needs and it was already programmed to 144.390 MHz. He told me that he had tried to sell it at hamfest, but received zero offers. He said that if I paid the shipping charges, he would send it gratis.
We worked the details and he shipped it out. The radio has arrived and while I haven't had the opportunity to work with it, it is a very generous gift.
I tried to give him some cash for his time and he told me to give it to someone more in need. It was donated to a local animal shelter in his name. I later went to dinner and saw a precocious infant. In his spirit, I bought the baby some ice cream and the little girl enjoyed it mightily. Passing it on to others for a better world.
He is a great exemplar for the radio hobby and selfless to a fault.
Kudos to mmckenna!
