It doesn't appear that the apps' name has been released yet, after reading the press release. Looks like they are just rolling it out. Well worth keeping an eye on!

they had something like this out earlier this year for blackberry. it would be nice but from what I recall reading you had to have at least 1 radio capable of hooking up via ip to rebroadcast to the units. I am also aware of an op called voxer that is similiar to PTT, my son was playing around with it some time ago and you can send private, unit to unit, group calls, voice, text photos and it will even send your location. would I trust this in a public safety type arena, probably not, but then again I am old school and working NY we were required to have at least 2 types of communication on the rig. most was done via nextel or 2 way. I'll tell you this also if you had to patch by radio to the ER (155.340 or 155.355 if I remember - I left in 2002) and were anywhere near the tappan zee bridge, you were screwed. there was a volly corps that used the same freq and their repeter would blow you right off the air.

Wow, this could be a big game-changer!
This is nothing special. Both Motorola and Harris have competing products. Motorola has the LEX platform, which requires a proprietary device. Harris has an "app" which goes onto any Droid phone, gets configured for which buttons do PTT, etc., and has a gateway server. Apparently these devices run in P25 protocol making the data packets which don't get distorted like bringing cellular down to baseband audio and then reconverting it to P25. They sound pretty good. But none of them have a direct mode (it would suck to be on the other side of the wall, need help, and have zero bars). They would all work with whatever means of connectivity was available. I like the Harris product (I do not work for them or benefit from this in any way). It was more open architecture and adaptable to the environment. It also had GPS enabled features that would light you and other units up on a map. It's going in this direction. Now, is this a good thing overall?

Are you sure that wasn't the Mt. Sinai security guards? They used to sound like Mr. Leonard on the Z morning zoo and would cut off any ambulance to ER report on HEAR radio (155.34) within the NY metro.

I've heard of this before and Raytheon isn't the only one doing it IIRC. Several people I know were testing various applications and software packages for mobile PCs (notebooks/MDTs etc) for the past few years. I sincerely doubt you're going to find this in the App Store even when it does become available; it indeed requires at least some kind of IP link (hardware) between the radio system and the Internet. For those of you who are hams, think IRLP with the ability to jump in from the internet side of things as well. I even recall hearing about one that linked multiple agencies' networks through the Internet, so a talkgroup on my radio system could be linked to a talkgroup on yours, and a third party could participate using a netbook or smartphone as well.

If you bothered to read the article...or the posts above yours...you would have your answer.

Do you feel better now? And I know who made the app but what is the name of the app itself!
