Mobile mount for 396T

I know there has been some discussion about mounting the 396T in a vehicle. Has anyone done it? Do you have any suggestions about an appropriate mount to use?

I'm leaning toward a cell phone mount which I can stick to the dash and slide the 396's "knob" into, but I'm concerned about it holding the weight.

That's what I'm currently using and it holds just fine. I've also got a standard CB mic holder in another vehicle that works well.

Vent mount here.
No Problems except it blocks the cold AC!!!

I had to modify my mount with a file to get my 396 to fit, but it works perfectly. Dont worry about the weight, better vent mounts have a piece at the bottom that rests on solid dash taking most the weight.

That's what I'm currently using and it holds just fine. I've also got a standard CB mic holder in another vehicle that works well.

The above is the route I would recommend. I would steer clear of the vent mounts due to condensation and flexing issues. (which results in the circuits getting wet and stressed)

Cell phone mount

Believe it or not I found a cell phone holder at The Dollar Tree store. Using heavy duty double sided mounting tape I attached it to my dashboard. The 396T knob slides right in.

To everyone mounting handheld scanners, please be aware of where you put them. As Joe points out, mounting on a A/C vent may do the radio no good. If you attach it do the dash, make sure you are not putting it in the path of the air bag, you really don't your radio to become a bullet powered by the air bag deployment. Also consider where it it in the event of an accident, a flying radio is no fun. :shock:

That is especially true for the passanger side airbag. They tend to cover a much greater area than just the opening where the bag is stored. Some will even cover up the radio area. If your scanner happens to be in the deployment zone, what Loiu said about the bullet it very much true.

It used to be common for PS mics to be mounted up high. Not so much any more. The deployment zone is a huge 'no-no' for putting ANYTHING. This is also an issue for those with XM or Serius (sp?) units, but that's for another board...

Second, just how is that supposed to answer the question I asked. What is it about a baseball card holder that you think makes it a mobile scanner holder? And this time, answer the question asked, don't assume I am some moron that doesn't know what a baseball card holder is, it is rude to ignore the question and just keep restating the same thing in another fashion.

Get a Radio Shack part number 17-204 "Slim Clip Dash Mount". You can stick it on your dash on any flat spot, and the post/button on the back of the '396 slides in.

Just how do you mount a baseball card holder in a vehicle so that it is secured in place so that you can clip the belt holder on it?

Just as a point of reference, if I was going to use the Belt Clip holder for that purpose, why would I not just hook it to something that is already in the vehicle, like the front of an ashtray, cup holder, etc. instead of a loose piece of plastic not attached to the vehicle? :?

I'm not sure that I should purchase a 396T - it says, "TRUNKTRACKER IV" in CAPS... should that be part of my criteria for selecting it or whether one should remain civil when conversing with Uniden?
