I just have a question about seeing mobile radios that people are using. I seen a couple of the updated shack pictures and it seems like alot of people are running them. What is tha advatge of using them and what are people actually using them for.. Just curious.

Thanks

A few reasons -

1) Better receive sensitivity
2) Better receive selectivity (Ability to reject interference)
3) Better audio quality compared to a cheesy scanner. :)

Last but not least is the envy of all your scanner friends.

If you do decide to go with a commercial radio instead of a scanner. Obtain one from a reputable source and be sure it is programmed for receive only or your may find your self in a heap of trouble.

Yeah, if your fancy new XTS-whatever decided to affiliate when you turned it on that would be BAD.

But don't worry, you'll have a fancy new XTS-whatever paperweight in short order!

In the Motorola commercial radio equipment forum there are several threads. Each with some RR cop warning of the evils of using transceivers to monitor trunking systems.

The truth is, as ve3nsv pointed out, get a reputable shop to program the radio and that is not usually a problem. I understand Lakeshore Electronics is frequently the source for programmed radios for the news media on Toronto's Public Safety system.

Apparently there are a number of nuances to making sure the radio is programmed correctly to avoid problems like those mrweather mentioned. Someone that may be used to programming systems for normal TX/RX may be unaware of some of them.
