greetings all, time for an account on this site. I am in the process of getting my tech and have a few radio questions. in my car I plan to run the Yaesu FTM400XDR for my primary communications, but also a commerical for public safety channels. 99% of the time i will only be listening, so i was looking at the uniden BCD996P2 scanner, but its crap IMO, its uniden. so with that, is there ANYTHING out there that is bboth UHF and VHF, digital, P25, trunking? my worthy contenders if I have to break it out are the Vertex EVX-5400, the VX-4600, or the icom F7500. downside is the space more than the price. I want to have one radio for PS if possible.

Thanks for the help!

awesome, thank you, that is a great scanner as well. Is there anything in the transceiver world that is as capable? basically, the TRX2 with TX capability. I'd really prefer not having to buy two Icom F7510's seeing how that would be around 3K.

While I might not be up to speed on the latest public safety equipment, most users do not require the ability to move between frequency bands and system types. The only radio model that I am aware of that will do multi-band, P25, and trunked/conventional is the Motorola APX 7500 or 8500 series (BIG bucks!). If you truly need such sophisticated capabilities, two separate radios may well be your most practical and cost-effective solution.

The other option for P25 with trunking is the NX-5xxx mobiles. They are single band but you can tie two to a single control head

You will need a system key though to program trunking into the radios.

The EVX series radios do DMR not P25

Why not a 536? It's more capable than the 996, and easier to program, at least in basic form. It has more options than the 996.

I've actually scratched all the commercials and the previous scanner based on what i found today. I'll be sticking with the FTM400XDR for ham and then pairing the whistler TRX2 with it. I have no immediate need for the commercial, and hitting over a grand for a radio that is 98% overkill just because of a want, it kills the deal. I think I'll grab a vertex once i get assigned a business freq of my own, but for now, I think I'm set. Thanks for the feedback folks!
