I recently bought a new car and am thinking about mounting a mobile antenna directly on to the roof. i used to run a trunk lip mount on my last car but it wont fit on my new one, and i wanted to move it to the roof for better reception anyways. so my question is, should a recieve only scanner antenna be grounded to the car body? I have a little experiance with Cbs and know about their needing ground plane to Tx, but what about to listen only??????

Yes,the ground not only affects tx, but rx too.I mounted a NMO quarter wave 18" antenna for my MURS mobile radio,before I used a mag-mount on the cab of my truck,for about a year.

Please dont drill a hole in the top of your car. Use an L-bracket. Made for NMO mounts. You will never be able to tell if the roof install is better. Look at this for an idea. www.bncantenna.com
