I'm studying for my Technician Class license, and in reading the one text, it recommends to have your radio setup to have the mode restricted freq's blocked so you don't accidentally transmit on them. I have a Yasu VX6R and have looked at the manual for this, but I don't seem to see anything that relates to this. Can someone help me out on how to do this or what I should be looking for?

Thanks,

Jvn

Frequencies blocked already

Assuming it is a brand new radio and not one bought off of ebay or at a flea market. As they should be, all new ham radios are restricted to the ham frequencies. If you bought a "moded" radio from someone, then you will have to have this mode reversed.

The mode restricted areas of 2 meters are:

Outside of those range of frequencies you have no privileges on 10 meters

12 meters - no privileges

Outside of that range of frequencies technicians have no privileges on 15 meters

40 meters:

Thanks... well I purchased my unit from a reputable dealer in Columbus, so you are saying it will already be mode restricted for all freq's for the tech class license and nothing more? Is there a way to check?

If it wasn't restricted, how do you make it restricted as I don't see anything in the manual to do that, or do I need external software to do all that?

Thanks all...

John

No you cannot "mode restrict" the VX-6. Know where you can and can not transmit FM. All part of being licensed... Being an FM only rig, you will ONLY be using repeaters or simplex portions of the bands the VX-6 can transmit on. Learn where these assignments are and stay with in them. Study the local/state band plan and learn where you are and are not allowed to use FM.
