MODESTO POLICE FLIGHT OFFICER INVOLVED IN SHOOTING

TURLOCK, CA - Last night a Modesto Police Officer working as a Tactical Flight Officer in the Stanislaus County Sheriff's Department helicopter shot and killed a man who was beating an infant in the middle of a roadway.

Modesto Police officers fly in the Sheriff's Department helicopter mainly on weekends or during special events. They act as navigators and operate special equipment on the aircraft designed to assist officers on the ground with lighting and searching for suspects. The Sheriff's Department helicopter provides service to law enforcement agencies throughout Stanislaus County.

Yesterday evening at about 10:15 pm the Sheriff's Department received 911 calls from citizens on Bradbury Road near the intersection of Blaker Road reporting a man was assaulting an infant. The intersection is surrounded by farm land and dairy pastures several miles west of Turlock. The callers said the man was in the middle of the road kicking the baby in the head.

The Sheriff's Department helicopter was flying over Turlock when the call came out and immediately responded to the area. The aircraft arrived before deputies in patrol vehicles on the ground. The helicopter crew observed the assault taking place from the air and made the decision to perform an emergency landing in a cow pasture near the roadway. The Modesto Police Officer exited the aircraft but was unable to reach the roadway where the assault was occurring due to an electric and barbed wire fence. The officer then shot the suspect who was later pronounced dead at the scene. The infant was transported to Emanuel Medical Center in Turlock but was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.

The Stanislaus County Sheriff's Department is investigating the assault on the infant. Both the Sheriff's Department and the Modesto Police Department are investigating the officer involved shooting. The Modesto Police Officer has been placed on administrative leave which is standard practice.

I hope that officer knows he did what he had to do, and made the right move in an effort to save that baby. It had to be a hard decision.
