Ok, this may be the easy way out for me but I have thrown 6 hours on my day off trying to figure out which scanner/receiver to grab for my mom's birthday. Then I find out the District police and what have you are possibly switching over to p25 in february.

My mom lives here

Changing to APCO 25 would mean any scanner that doesnt handle a digital p25 signal would not be able to listen I assume, kind of like the whole DTV thing for TV's. So would purchasing a regular analog/digital scanner not be the best investment to pick up the action my mom seems to be intrigued by? Or would the units still work but pick up fewer and fewer signals as they implement the system.

They may or may not have the money to do so now, but that was the plan to go ahead with in February. I doubt they can implement it that quickly, but the apco 25 upgrade topic has spun after staring at this screen for so long.

I appreciate any response given and apologize if its been asked too many times.

Go digital now instead of buying analog and needing to go digital with another scanner later.

If you're looking to go digital only to receive LE traffic, you may as well stick with an analog scanner. Last I heard, when they go digital, they're also going encrypted.

A very untrue blanket statement

UPDATE:

Many thanks to radioreference, psr-edit and the radio company. Two weeks ago I did not even know what apco 25 was, this site informed me quite well and I truly appreciate it. This site and its integration with scanner programming software is just as simple as can be. Upgrade to premium and have psredit download the wanted frequencies to my scanner.

I finally ordered the only scanner I found worth investing cash into as per the reviews on several sites, the GRE psr-500. I bought it from the radio company, there was a slight glitch in their system that caused my order to be overlooked. They called me and I appreciate them keeping me up to speed, due to the oddity and the fact of it being a gift they bumped me to overnight/saturday delivery for no extra cost, which was awsem of them.

Two hours after getting it I still do not understand much about it, but I do have 150+ channels thrown onto it already and its good enough to get wrapped up and given to my mom.

Thanks again radio-reference for having such an informed and up to date site/community, hopefully Ill keep on reading and maybe I will get a scanner for myself too.

----my only question now is.....is it bad to use the rechargeable insert in the radio, I have an external charger or does that not matter...????
