I've got a 580T+ that I'm trying to use to monitor a SmartNet system. While the specification on the radio indicate PP and LTR only, I've seen several posts online that hint that Type-II is possible. I'm looking for any programming tips that will get me going. Thanks!

To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:
Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.
For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is possible, in limited capacity. I used the free Win95 software at starrsoft.com to convert the talkgroups from type II to type I. Enter all the talk groups as type II 5 digit and then change the all of the fleetmap settings from type II to S02. You'll notice duplicates. There are also some oddities with talk groups at times. All in all though, it makes a great Public Safety scanner.
There used to be a spreadsheet in the downloads area that allowed you to enter in a list of TGs to convert. You want to use sizecode A and set the radio id to 0. The radio id is important because of how A breaks things down. It's basically equivalent to the 'status bit.'
