Hello all, first time caller here.

I've been trying to get my BC250D (with the Apco card installed) set up to monitor the Holly Springs talk groups, but I'm just not having any success. I've entered the talkgroup IDs as found over in the RR database, but I haven't picked up a single transmission on any of them. I don't have any problems monitoring other local agencies using VIPER, so I'm at a bit of a loss. Also, I'm using the CC freq's from the Blue Ridge Rd. tower, if that makes any difference.

I'd be grateful if anyone has any additional tips or suggestions!

Best regards,
J.

i Would guess that you trying to load up the viper system as a apco digital system.. try loading it up as a Motorola Type II system and it should work.. viper is analog and digital so you need to load it as a analog system

Thanks for the response and the suggestion, blacker.

Actually, I already have the trunks set up as Moto Type II, and I don't have any issues picking up the other local agencies that I've entered which are on VIPER, analog or digital. For example, I have the Fuqay-Varina and Morrisville groups in the same bank, and I don't have any problems receiving them (or others). It's just Holly Springs that I'm having issues with, unfortunately.

Best regards,
J.

When setting up your channels, you have to go by whatever type of system the local services have. The state system (SHP, etc) at the moment is analog (where it's up and running), and several of the new local systems are digital. The radios used by most local and state departments are capable of both, and several of the talkgroups are shared. The RR database is the best source for what's what, and as more systems are updated and others come on line, there'll probably be some delay in getting the changes into the database. VIPER is the infrastructure that ties it all together, and since the coordination of the individual systems into VIPER requires some changes from time to time to avoid interference, Holly Springs may be one of those affected by some recent changes. I've recently noticed some talkgroups I'm used to hearing certain traffic on are being used by another agency or group. Anyway, the traffic tells me it ain't law enforcement secondary anymore, and them ain't the unit numbers or voices I'm used to hearin.' Since I've been away from the state for a year or so, I can't pull the info out that I used to be privvy to.

I am showing Holly Springs having the following Talkgroups on the Viper system:

HSprings.jpg

However you might want to check 460.075Mhz & 460.125Mhz...I know Holly Springs PD was using one of the 2 above freq's as recently as a couple years ago...I will check with a close friend "in the know" in Holly Springs and let you know if they are on the old UHF freq's or if they have migrated everything over to VIPER...feel free to contact me off the forums at MSherard@gmail.com to keep in touch over this issue...

There ARE using 460.125! I just programmed this into my Maxtrac because I'm headed to the Outer Banks & Washington County uses the same freq and I've been getting Holly Springs loud & clear from my place here in North Raleigh for several days now.

Thanks, and some followup

Thanks all, for your responses. I'm a bit late with my reply, but I had started sweeping the 460.xxx range out of curiosity after reading WX4CBH's note.

Holly Springs is still using *both* of the freq's Marshall had listed above, with 460.125 being main/dispatch (as Murray pointed out in the previous post), and 460.075 being "1" (I'm assuming Ops 1, based on the VIPER listings). I was also picking them up at 465.1250. So, I'm guessing that they still have not made the transition to trunked yet. The only other thing I'm picking up with regularity in that range down here is Chatham Co. Sheriff on 460.4750.

Thanks again,
J.

PS -- With the BC250D, you do set up the trunks for a specific system type (i.e., Moto Type II), but you don't need to tell it whether the talkgroups you're entering are analog or digital. If you don't have the P25 card installed, or enabled, you'll just hear data traffic when a P25 talkgroup is active. With it installed/enabled, you'll hear voice. While I'm sure that defining the mode when entering talkgroups is necessary for some scanners, it isn't with mine (at least, not that I've found). :)

Well, the stuff you're hearing on 465.1250 is the input to the 460.1250 repeater frequency.

Another one you might plug in is Fire; 151.1600 MHz repeater output.

Chuk

Thanks, KB4MDZ... I will punch that one in as well and give it a listen. And again, thank you all for your replies!
