Monitoring Times Magazine

How many of you guys / gals subscribe to this magazine? Is it really informative and helpful in learning about scanning?

I do! Excellent resource, and very informative. Though, I am not trying to downplay RadioReference. I actually spend more time reading posts in here. My last couple of posts were very informative, with all types of intriguing replies from other guests. The one thing I don't like about MT is that some articles can be to localized, and very few articles discuss scanning topics in my neck of the woods.

It is a great magazine but is real heavy on shortwave and general radio info...there is usually only one or two articles on scanning each month. I found Scanning USA to be a better scanning magazine because it is dedicated to scanning alone.
Like I said, if you want general radio info along with scanning, MT is a great mag.

I see that you can get MT from grove-ent.com ; I searched Google and found Scanning USA, I think I will go with that since it is only scanning articles. I have had a scanner for years and listened on and off, but I got this new 396T and love it and I want to learn a lot more and stop being such a newbie.

I have enjoyed Monitoring Times for many years. There are lots of nice reviews of scanners and other hobby related radios. Regular columns also cover most of the areas of my interests such as scanning, ham radio, SW DXing, MW DXing, etc.

Popular Communications, which is published by CQ magazine (ham), is also a good source of general information for the scanner and Shortwave hobbiest.

I have gotten MT since it was a newspaper style publication. It has changed with the times and I now get it on line, and save it to CD for reference later. Always a great ref.

IMO, Scanning USA is lightweight and somewhat amateurish.

Popular Communications is a great middle-of-the-road radio and scanning magazine. I subscribe to Pop Comm and there's always something that catches my interest. For example, they recently ran a 5 part article on interfacing your scanner to the Internet, and always publish recurring articles on popular topics such as trunking.

Monitoring Times is the most technical of the magazines. As others have said, it's highly regionalized - if they cover something in your neck of the woods, then you're set, otherwise it doesn't apply to you at all. I check it out on the newsstand every month and only buy it if an article pertains to my interests.

I've subscribed for 6-7 years now, its been a great help on many parts of the radio spectrum.

I agree with eorange in the fact that scanning USA is not always perefct as far as proofreading goes, but it is dedicated to scanning and has some really good info.

Enjoy your mag...as you get more into it try the others too...they are all great mags!

Another good magazine that I subscribe to is National Communications, lots of good info / articles in there. Geared towards alot of scanning stuff, and some Ham stuff also.

I've never seen the Scanning USA mag. before, but I'm going to search for it tonight, and maybe give it a try.
